For Greek myth fans, those who can’t get enough of the D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, and readers who have aged out of Rick Riordan, this classroom staple and mythology classic is perfect for learning about the ancient myths!

As the gods and goddesses of Olympus scheme, the ancient world is thrown into turmoil when Helen, the most beautiful woman in all of Greece, is stolen away by her Trojan love. Inflamed by jealousy, the Greek king seeks lethal vengeance and sends his black war ships to descend on the city of Troy.
In the siege that follows, history’s greatest heroes, from Ajax to Achilles to Odysseus, are forged in combat, and the brutal costs of passion, pride, and revenge must be paid. In the end, the whims of the gods, the cunning of the warriors, and a great wooden horse will decide who emerges victorious.
    Homer's epic poem,
The Iliad, is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time and Rosemary Sutcliff's retelling of the classic saga embodies all of the astonishing drama, romance, and intrigue of ancient Greece.

Don’t miss The Wanderings of Odysseus, the companion to Black Ships Before Troy, and follow Odysseus on his adventure home.

Praise for Black Ships Before Troy:

An ALA-YALSA Best Book for Young Adults

A splendid offering, bringing the ancient tale to new and vibrant life.”—Kirkus Reviews, Pointer

"
Amazingly told, taut with cunning and terror.”—Booklist

"[Sutcliff] brings into vivid focus the mythic story of the Trojan War, with all of its visually dramatic elements…[and] leaves many of the epic’s powerful metaphors intact."—Publishers Weekly

Praise for The Wanderings of Odysseus:

"[Sutcliff] retells Homer's Odyssey with thrilling drama...The story of the hero's long years of wandering...has the mythic power of everyone's search for home...[and she] fuses epic grandeur with a direct simplicity that will bring the universal story home."—Booklist

"Rosemary Sutcliff has done a great service...by warmly and carefully abridging two classics that many people find difficult to tackle in their original form. Not only has she broken the long tales into tolerable and interesting chapters, she has smoothed out the language while keeping true to all of the original drama and excitement."—Parent Express

"An intimate portrait of a man....Readers will enjoy this classic adventure."—SLJ

From the Back Cover

"The Story of the Iliad
Homer's epic poem, The Illiad, is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. In it, the abduction of the legendary beauty, Helen of Troy, leads to a conflict in which even the gods and goddesses take sides and intervene. It is in the Trojan War that the most valiant heroes of the ancient world are pitted against one another. Here Hectore, Ajax, Achilles, and Odysseus meet their most formidable challenges and in some casas their tragic ends.
Rosemary Sutcliff makes such extraordinary stories as those of those Trojan horse, of Aphrodite and the golden apple, and of the fearsome warrior women Amazons, accessible to contemporary young people.

Initially an art-school trained painter of miniatures, Rosemary Sutcliff’s first children's book was published in 1950, and from then on she devoted her time and talents to the writing of children's books and history novels, which have placed her name high in the field of contemporary children's literature and historical fiction. The UK Guardian newspaper called her a “writer of genius” in their obituary. Rosemary received an OBE in the 1975 Birthday Honours List, and a CBE in 1990.

Rosemary Sutcliff's novels won much critical acclaim in her lifetime and since. The best-known of her Roman novels is The Eagle of the Ninth, and the related trilogy of which the second, The Lantern Bearers, was awarded the 1959 Carnegie Medal. Her re-telling of the legend of Tristan and Iseult was highly highly recommended for the same award in 1972, once the award was opened up for re-awarding to the same author.

Rosemary Sutcliff was born in Surrey, the daughter of a naval officer. Later in her life she lived in Devon and then Sussex. At the age of two she contracted the progressively wasting Still's disease, and hence spent most of her life in a wheelchair. Sadly, Rosemary died in 1992 at the age of 72.

In the book Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff, she rewrites the story of Homer's Iliad for young readers. Many of the characters include royalty and warriors from Sparta and Troy as well as Greek gods who liked to interfere in their lives. It retells the story of the Trojan war, the Iliad by Homer. The Trojan war was a fight over the beautiful Helen. In the end the Greeks construct a huge wooden horse, which they leave behind as a war token. What happens after, you will have to read it.
The Iliad is a book about a man's attractiveness to physical beauty and obsession over it. One of the main characters, Paris, is attracted to a woman named Helen, and steals her from another man, Menelaus. This sparks the Trojan War that lasts ten years. After ten years of fierce battles, Paris and Menelaus agree to fight to the death over Helen. Whoever wins will get to marry her.
Also in the book is the story of Achilles. Achilles is a strong and brave fighter. Menelaus realizes he can't win the Trojan War without Achilles. During the war Achilles falls in love and gets distracted during all the long battles. He eventually loses the love of his life, and leaves the battlefield upset.
The author Rosemary Sutcliff has written two books made for young adults, one is the Iliad, and the other is the Odyssey, both by Homer. This book is easy to read because it’s so interesting and has short chapters. If you like this genre, it’s very engaging. Like a Greek tragedy, it story transcends all time periods and issues. It's a very interesting book, and I did not want to put it down because it’s a good introduction to Greek mythology. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I plan on reading her second book. In the end I would definitely recommend this book to someone who likes Greek mythology, or interested in battles.

This book was a small paperback, and didnt have a lot of illustrations. Still, my two grandkids enjoyed listening to me read the book to them, and the story was exciting and a great addition to our Ancient Civilizations study. This book was recommended as part of the History Quest Curriculum.

We all know that as literate adults we should read the Iliad. I did, back in college. But now I have a teenage son, and we're studying Ancient Greece right now. I just couldn't bring myself to make him read the full version yet, so I shopped for an alternate version. After reading scores of reader reviews of various books, I settled on this one. And, boy, am I glad I did!

When the Amazon box arrived (don't you just love getting those boxes?) I picked up Black Ships to take a look before I passed it to my son. But I didn't hand it over until I'd read the whole thing! It's fabulous!

Remember when you read the Iliad, how hard it was to keep track of all the different characters, and who had offended whom, and who came from where, and all those little details? That, on top of deciphering the archaic language form, made the reading somewhat tedious. Interesting, yes, but it took effort! This version was so much more fun. I didn't have to keep flipping back and forth in order to keep up, and the story just surged along. Furthermore, Sutcliff manages to keep the flavor of the original tome intact, using vivid prose.

My son is enjoying it so far, too - he's reading it of his own free will! And I believe his experience will be positive enough that when it comes time to read Iliad and Odyssey, he will be excited. (And actually read the full version and not some abridged form or, heaven forbid... Cliff Notes!!!)

So, if you just want to brush up on your memory of the Iliad, or introduce it to some reluctant reader, or you have a child in mind, then I highly recommend this book. She's done a fantastic job.

One caveat, this version does not have illustrations...

Back when I was teaching 6th grade, they were supposed to learn the story of the Iliad. Since the epic version isn't 12-year-old friendly, I looked up "Iliad for kids" and got this one. I read it to the class, and they mostly liked it, especially the part where the man had to dress as a woman. They're 12, of course they find that funny.
Basically instead of being an epic poem, the author made the Iliad into a novel that's easy to read. There is also a similar version of the Odyssey that you can get as a separate book. If you want kids to know the story in general, this is a great option. If you want to teach/read the original epic poem, this is not what you want. I own bother versions and this this option is really cool, even though I also love classic literature! It's kid-friendly for young teens and up (like I said, I read it to 12-year-olds, but younger ones might not like it), but it's certainly not kiddie. An adult wanting the story might like this, too.

I love this translation of the Illiad. I remember plodding through the story when I was in high school. Read through this version with my 7 year old and she and I both really enjoyed it.

It has been cleaned up considerably. It is still a story about war, so there is still blood and killing, but it is not graphic.

It's a real good summary while still having a poetic feel to it. There are illustrations on every other page and they are really gorgeous.

Good for 10+ years old I would say; the language is a bit flowery but momentum is maintained throughout the narrative. Death and violent scenes feature heavily, so, depending on the child, some caution may be required. The follow-on account of the Odyssey by the same author and illustrator is also superb (but sadly out of print at present).

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Version of the Siege of Troy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2012
Rosemary Sutcliffe is an author that I was unfamiliar with until quite recently. Having now read a number of her books I feel I have discovered one of the very best authors I could hope to read. Accessible to both children and adults - this book is in my view the best modern version of the Siege of Troy. Accessible, easy to read, exciting and intelligentlly written. In parts reminiscent of the Illiad itself but covering what I would call the whole story from start to finish. An excellent introduction to the classic Greek story but more than that, a wonderful read in its own right. I look forward to reading more of her work. Those into audio books have a treat in store if they purchase the audio book. Beautifully read.
