Myths: Tales of the Greek and Roman Gods Hardcover – Illustrated, September 1, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
From the same series as Abrams’ successful Saints and Angels comes Myths: Tales of the Greek and Roman Gods, richly illustrated with representations of these celestial heralds from ancient murals and pottery to the paintings of Gustav Klimt and Odilon Redon.
Author and art historian Lucia Impelluso has drawn from a variety of sources, including the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus, the epics of Homer and Virgil, Aesop’s fables, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Petrarch’s sonnets, and the works of Pindar, Sophocles, Plutarch, Pliny the Elder, and Bocaccio.
Beginning with the stories of Earth’s creation and its early rulers, the Titans, Impelluso recounts the major episodes and figures of Greek and Roman mythology, with sections on the gods of the sky, the sea, the earth, and the underworld; the Fates and the Muses; monsters; human heroes; and the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid. Here are beloved stories, retold and illustrated in a wonderful, giftable format.

The artwork is amazing! The author gives us tons of photos of beautiful paintings, sculptures, etc. that were made to depict the gods and other mythical figures. So this book is great for art lovers, too.
It would be nice if the book was a little bigger- maybe the author will come out with a bigger version. It's very thick, but small. In a way though, the small size is cute.
Overall, this is the best Greek/Roman mythology book I've ever read- and I've read a lot!!
This book is like an exciting kaleidoscope of mythology. It imprints those myths in your memory through the beautiful images. I recommend this book for those reasons.
But it is also hugely annoying to me that the book is so small (the size of pages is only 4.5 inches by 6 inches). Who on earth would be so stingy and mindless to publish a gorgeous book like this in a "toy" format? This book needs to be re-published in normal size -- not a coffee table book size necessarily, but something like 8 x 10 inches at least. Or make it even a coffee table book; it's worth it. I'd rather pay twice as much, or more, but have a book that I and my family can truly cherish and revisit over the years.
I will gladly buy another copy of this book if they republish it in bigger size.
But what really needs to be fixed is the format (book size); It does not make justice to the pictures which are often split in two pages.

It's 'little' in height and width, but still quite a thick book - more than 750 pages of glossy quality paper (the actual dimensions are 11.4 x 4.8 x 15.2 cm).
As you'll see from my little video 'browse', the general format is that in each set of pages the left-hand side gives information about a mythological character or story, while the right-hand side shows the character/incident as depicted by an artist (usually an Old Master painting, though there are a few relatively modern pictures and also examples of ancient art and sculpture.)
The high-quality paper and hard cover make this a surprisingly weighty book for its size, and all in all I regard it as a real bargain at this price.
However, it's not perfect. The main problem (for me) is that the illustrations inevitably suffer by being shrunk down to such a small size. While this means they don't really show the true beauty of the artists' work, they still fulfil the function of providing pleasing and relevant illustrations for the accompanying text.
I was tempted to make this a 4-star review, but really, 'it is what it is', and for this price it's definitely worth the fifth star.
I only wish they did a full-sized coffee table version of the book. I would have happily paid several times the price for such a thing. On the other hand, you could leave this on your coffee table too, and people could pick it up without straining a muscle!
