Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book is the book I wished I had a few years ago. I was tasked with providing technology support to a highly volatile organization operating in more than 50 countries using a small, inexperienced IT team with practically no budget. And I didn't want to just survive - I wanted IT to be awesome.  My team and I began searching for solutions, a search that culminated in the birth of Ultralight. We had to dispense with the conventional wisdom (we couldn't afford to use it anyway), and instead use a cloud-based approach focused on simplicity and a great user experience. It has proved incredibly successful for us, and I wanted to share the lessons we learned.
What IDC has called the "Third Platform" - particularly mobile and cloud computing - empower smaller organizations to do incredible things. By building around platforms like Google Apps for Work or Microsoft Office 365, we can spend less, do more, compete aggressively against the biggest businesses, and enjoy a level of IT quality and security that would have been impossible even five years ago.

Read this book if you're interested in a solid survey of excellent best practices and advice. As someone whose role is shifting towards DevOps and IT, I found incredible value consolidated into this little book. Schwab warns us that the latter chapters of the book might only be interested if we're deploying Google cloud-based services. He is correct. I found tremendous value in the larger first part, marginal value in the second. If you want to deploy Google Docs in your organization, you will find tremendous value throughout. Read it!

Information Technology plays a vital role for a company’s ability to compete and survive in today’s business world. It is vital for decision making, marketing, business growth, collaboration, resource management, and customer support. It is impossible to attain long term business success without leveraging the benefits of information technology in this digital age, but how can a small to medium size organization with limited personnel and resources meet the organization’s IT service needs while providing an adequate level of security?

Ultralight IT not only introduces the reader to the tools necessary, but gets the reader to focus on the business problem first. The heart of Ultralight IT is the proper utilization of the tool-sets you choose to use. Ultralight IT is A MUST for any small business organization and their IT team. I think that this book is the perfect companion to Guerrilla Marketing because it addresses the needs of smaller to medium sized organizations to compete with the giants.

I'm a somewhat newbie to networking (I'm getting my degree). My son recommended this book to me, as he knows the author.
This should be required reading for anyone in the networking field. It clearly details how to establish a network on a limited budget without sacrificing speed, applications or redundancy.

With the advent and growing popularity of social entrepreneurs and the democratization of the economy I imagine many start-ups and small businesses will find this an invaluable resource, as they try to realize their dreams on shoe-string budgets. In particular as the competition for IT talent grows. Andy does a great job of defining the challenges, identifying the pain points of so many smaller businesses and developing a creative solution that utilizes the advances in Cloud technology. Somewhat philosophical, as well as identifying that there is a strong education component, I'm part of the organization where he implemented this solution and the results were phenomenal. He does a good job making it an enjoyable read even for the non-geeks who might pick this up. I was given a copy of the book from the author.
