At last a well written, comprehensive volume on the subject. Excellent reading, and educational as to the culture of Crete and early Europe from the mythological perspective.

The book was published just over a hundred years ago, so the style will be a bit formal to those readers raised during the decline of English; more importantly the book was published prior to the deciphering of Linear B, while ethnologists still saw a strong and descendant connection between Crete and Neolithic Europe. Still, the book remains a good reference about the myths of Crete from an Attic point of view.

Interesting book with a lot of details.

This book is a very good jumping off point for anyone interested on the origins of mythology in Europe pre written records. Which is very hard to find information and books about. I will say that some of his information is obviously out of date given that this was originally published in 1917 but for the majority of it hat is really bit a big issue. He writes very well and abd draws from numerous sources to leave is with a work that is still useful today. Just keep in mind that there are some newer theories about some of this that are worth checking out that add to the information here. I wish mire books like this existed honestly. More analysis of early beliefs is very tricky to be sure but endlessly fascinating.

Still a new reader should be wary and keep in mind that thia should not be read alone but with other more recent books. Some of his ideas and analysis are very reflective of his era and not really helpful to today's reader alone. But if you go read beyond this you will find this still useful.

An added note: the title implies a focus on Crete but it is really a look at many mythologies and cultures from pre written history with evidence taken from written records archaeology and other areas

Despite the fact that Crete is featured prominently in the title of this work, it is, at best, only tangentially mentioned in the text. What's there is insightful, but you really have to dig to find it.

Moreover, there seems to be no specific thesis for this work. It spans topics ranging from burial rituals to architecture to artwork to mythology, and from the Egyptians to Babylonians to the Norse to the English.

Further, the digital version of this book has some truly dreadful formatting issues, including entire missing pages of text.

If you are not familiar with the various ages and the spread of civilization throughout said ages, this book will offer food for thought and amaze you with the mobility of people and goods which preceded the classical age of Greece.

E' arrivato almeno una settimana prima di quanto indicato nell'ordine. Un pò malandato (ma lo avevano indicato). L'unica pecca è la copertina che non coincide con quella pubblicata (ma non è un problema).

It put me in the picture- that is, the ancient pictures- and I'm so looking forward to going back to a former life in those times. A scholarly but very readable book.

3.0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE BUT.......
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2011
Written in the early part of the 20th century this book covers off the myths and legends of most of the world, not just Crete and Europe. We get examples linked to goings on in Scotland and the Polynesian Islands, never mind just mainland Europe (I am aware Scotland is part of Europe). Enjoyable, but I would have preferred the authors to have kept things more focussed on Crete and Europe rather than trying to find linkages across the rest of the world. In parts it gets tedious but it was interesting to see early theory's being aired and tested, most of them long superseded I know but even so worth a read from that point of view, and the price of course.

The title is incorrect, this book is little or nothing to do with the mythology of ancient Crete. Cultural and anthropological review of the people of Europe would be more accurate.
