Ingenuity saves the day in this cleverly constructed board book!

Bestselling author/illustrator Cybèle Young is back with a board book for the very young. The main character of this charming, nearly wordless story is a small unidentified mammal who accidentally loses his ball one day. Too small to look out the window, the little creature is frustrated at first in his attempts to see where his precious ball has gone. But undeterred, he perseveres until he comes up with a solution to his problem, at which point he discovers that an unusual parade is underway. This parade doesn't feature the usual floats and mascots-instead, it is made up of amazing machines and strange hybrid creatures. Our young hero is thrilled, as young readers will be. And best of all? On the very last page of the book, the lost ball is returned to its rightful owner.

This leporello-style board book is designed so that the first half of the story focuses on the attempt to see what is happening out the window, while the second half, revealed only when the book is flipped over, shows a wonderfully inventive parade. Despite its simplicity, this is a story with much humor and many surprises. Nearly wordless, it is a book that even the youngest child will want to read independently as well as enjoy with others.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—This beautifully designed accordion-fold board book will provide plenty of entertainment for the littlest readers. As the book literally unfolds, a small bear-like creature accidently throws his ball through a window. In the small window square, everything from what looks like the beginning of a slide to bubbles appear as the creature struggles to climb up and interact with the tantalizing objects. Finally, as the creature decides to use a chair to look out, the text instructs readers that it is "time to turn around." As readers flip the book, they will see the creature celebrating as he watches a unique parade filled with uncommon animals and bizarre inventions. The youngest prereaders will love the colorful and busy illustrations done in mixed media, while slightly older ones will understand that they are seeing "the window" from the other side. Although the book construction is clever, it is delicate and may not stand up to multiple circulations. It will, however, make for a wonderful new baby gift.—Brooke Rasche, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Cybèle Young is an internationally renowned artist, represented by galleries in New York, London, Vancouver and Calgary. She studied sculpture and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design, and has since been awarded over

twenty arts grants and awards, and has received considerable notice is such publications as Art in America, Canadian Art magazine, the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Now magazine, Fibre Arts, Maclean’s, Elle and Toronto Life.

Her work resides in major collections around the world.

Young creates miniature sculptural works from fine Japanese papers. Her inspirations come from fleeting day-to-day experiences while her creativity flourishes in the mundane, where small observations become fantastic. The results are works that emerge from familiar motifs abstracted by passing impressions.

Young compiles these sculptures to create communities that interact and form new relationships – much like how the small seemingly insignificant moments in our everyday lives can come together to create unexpected outcomes.

This book is so much fun! It has no words with super fun pictures allowing a child to make up a new story every time it is read. My son wanted to read it over and over.

Wonderfully illustrated and cleverly designed. Not too much story or moral though; granted it is a picture book.

Fun idea for a children's book. Our little one enjoys being enclosed by the "fence" of the spread-out book as she scans it.
