This is the second volume in an ambitious series giving the reader a comprehensive narrative of late Roman military history from AD 284-641. Each volume (7 are planned) gives a detailed account of the changes in organization, equipment, strategy and tactics among both the Roman forces and her enemies in the relevant period, while also giving a detailed but accessible account of the campaigns and battles.

This volume covers the tumultuous period from the death of Constantius II in AD 361 to the death of Theodosius. Among the many campaigns covered, it therefore includes the Emperor Julian’s fatal campaign against the Sassanian Persians and the disastrous defeat and death of Valens at Adrianople in 378. Such calamities illustrate the level of external threat Rome’s armies faced on many fronts in this difficult period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the latter half of the fourth century
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2019
The second volume in the series The Military History of Late Rome (361-395) by Ilkka Syvanne reevaluates the events of the latter half of the fourth century. It gives a detailed analysis of the reign of Julian together with his failed Persian campaign. The account of the campaign shows Julian as expert tactician with several reconstructed battles, while also showing why his strategy failed and how the Persians managed to manipulate and defeat him. Syvanne also shows how Julian contributed to the events that followed. His analysis of the following reigns demonstrates how the Romans were already using the hollow square in the same manner as it was used in the tenth century. This part of his text owes a lot to his doctoral dissertation. Dr. Syvanne also analyses how Valentinian and Valens tried to reform the Empire and why it was that Valens lost at Adrianople in 378. He argues also for the rehabilitation of the fame and name of Gratian. One of the most important conclusions of his book is that he brings to light the overlooked other aspects that resulted in the settlement of the Goths in Thrace and Pannonia - an event that had far reaching consequences later. I will leave these for the readers to find out. The book ends with an analysis of the reign of Theodosius I Great and argues that Theodosius deserved his title even if he was not a good general himself.

Overall it’s a good if rather expensive book which would have benefited from some colour images.
