Thomas F. Madden is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University. As an author and historical consultant he has appeared in such venues as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and The History Channel.

Awards for his scholarship include the Haskins Medal, awarded by the Medieval Academy of America, and the Otto Grundler Prize, awarded by the Medieval Institute. He is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

This book is written for people who want to get a quick overview of the Crusades. There is not an emphasis on detail but since the subject is so large - encompassing Crusades in the Holy Land, Spain, France and the Baltic - and covering hundreds of years, this serves me well. It is perfect for those people who see a program on the History Channel and need a quick review of a certain Crusade. The illustrations provide the reader a intangible feel of the era. There are interesting analyses of "Crusade" from different points of view. These point out that the word Crusade means much more than a series of romantic trips Europeans embarked on to the Holy Land but also means a shameless killing of many peoples - Arab as well as many other others.

Within the covers of this book is an even-handed, albeit introductory, approach to the enigma known as the Crusades. It is written in more of an essay style, giving brief glimpses into various topics within the long history of the Crusades. There are numerous photographs which will interest the eye and much simple explanation of their importance to the narrative text. Also included is a chronology of events at the end of the book. The contributing team of scholars' narratives are never condescending to the reader or partial to any of the participants of the prolonged affair collectively known as the Crusades. The book is an easy read and I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to gain an introductory knowledge of the religious wars of the last half of the last millenium.
