I enjoy Roman history and was attracted to this book for that reason but this volume provides a closer survey of some of the baddies. Caligula, Nero, Commodus and Elagabalus among others. An entertaining look at a sort of Roman Rogues Gallery!

August Mead's "Infamous Roman Emperors" is a captivating journey into the darker side of the Roman Empire, providing readers with a vivid and scandalous exploration of some of history's most notorious rulers. The book takes a refreshing approach to ancient Roman history, delving into the intriguing and often shocking lives of emperors who are remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Mead's writing style is engaging, and he skillfully weaves together the stories of these infamous emperors, making the book read like a mad Roman soap opera. The author successfully presents the rise and fall of the Roman Empire through the lens of its most corrupt and scandalous leaders, offering a unique perspective that goes beyond the usual tales of conquest and political intrigue.

The book is structured around intriguing questions that pique the reader's curiosity, such as Nero's actions during the burning of Rome, Elagabalus's gender reassignment surgery, Caligula's relationships with his sisters, and the bizarre desire to make a horse a senator. This approach adds an element of suspense and anticipation, making it difficult for readers to put the book down.

One of the strengths of "Infamous Roman Emperors" lies in its ability to balance shock and amusement. The author skillfully navigates through the scandalous details of each emperor's life, presenting the information in a way that is both informative and entertaining. The book manages to educate readers on historical events while maintaining an engaging narrative that feels more like a page-turning novel than a traditional history book.

Mead's exploration of the emperors' personal lives, scandals, and idiosyncrasies provides a humanizing touch to historical figures often viewed through a distant and stoic lens. By presenting the emperors as flawed individuals with relatable (albeit extreme) human traits, the author brings a refreshing perspective to the study of ancient Rome.

While the book is filled with shocking revelations and amusing anecdotes, it also prompts readers to reflect on the broader historical context and the impact these rulers had on the Roman Empire. Mead successfully combines entertainment with education, creating a well-rounded narrative that caters to both history enthusiasts and casual readers.

In conclusion, "Infamous Roman Emperors" is a delightful and informative read that breathes new life into the study of ancient Roman history. August Mead's engaging storytelling and unique approach make this book a standout in the genre, offering readers a chance to explore the scandalous and captivating side of the Roman Empire's past.

This is a very good book on some of the most infamous roman emperors in history. You think our culture is crazy now, it's got nothing on these people. Murder, betrayal, excess of all kinds, it's all here. Look no further than a good history lesson to educate yourself on the ugliness humanity is capable of. Well written, researched, and eye catching, this is an excellent resource for anyone interested in this topic.

The book was interesting, if a little dry. I was familiar with most of the emperors covered, but learned some new things about other ones. I did find the author to be a bit subjective at times. Still, worth a read – and a reminder that today, still, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Very clear points. Good source of information if you want a broad stroke of who they really were. Good read

This was a fascinating read. I love learning about leaders, warriors, and generals throughout history, the good and the bad. You hear a lot about Marcus Aurelius when you talk about Rome, but what about the other emperors? Here you go, everything you wanted to know about many of Rome's most despicable leaders, all in one neat package! After reading this, you may think twice about certain aspects of the Roman Empire.

I remember these names from high school history like Nero and Caligula but this provides a lot of context that doesn't excuse their behavior but it makes it seem less random but somehow even more bizarre. I like books like this that are dense in information.
