古代において実に多くのケルト王国が散在していたのがわかる。もちろん王国間の闘争も日常的に頻発していたし、ローマの大勢力との対峙もあったし、ブリテン島ではゲルマン族、バイキング族と果敢に戦っていったのだ。
現在のイギリスは多民族連合国家であるとの思いを新たにした。現国名からしてそうではないか。今、スコットランド独立が云々されているがこの行く末はどうだろうか。俳優のショーン・コネリーは独立に賛成しているが、当人の名前からしてアングロサクソン人にあらずだとわかる。 とまれ、本書は教師も含め英語に関心ある人なら読むべきであろうと思える。
少々、気になった箇所は、項目に続く説明が数頁に及ぶものがあるということ。これは著者の思い入れがひとしお強いからではないかと思った。
