The great war epic of Western literature, in a stunning translation by acclaimed classicist Robert Fagles

A Penguin Classic

Dating to the ninth century B.C., Homer’s timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb introduction that although the violence of the
Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.

Combining the skills of a poet and scholar, Robert Fagles brings the energy of contemporary language to this enduring heroic epic. He maintains the drive and metric music of Homer’s poetry, and evokes the impact and nuance of the
Iliad’s mesmerizing repeated phrases in what Peter Levi calls “an astonishing performance.”

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Amazon.com Review

This groundbreaking English version by Robert Fagles is the most important recent translation of Homer's great epic poem. The verse translation has been hailed by scholars as the new standard, providing an Iliad that delights modern sensibility and aesthetic without sacrificing the grandeur and particular genius of Homer's own style and language. The Iliad is one of the two great epics of Homer, and is typically described as one of the greatest war stories of all time, but to say the Iliad is a war story does not begin to describe the emotional sweep of its action and characters: Achilles, Helen, Hector, and other heroes of Greek myth and history in the tenth and final year of the Greek siege of Troy.

Review

"Fitzgerald has solved virtually every problem that has plagued translators of Homer. The narrative runs, the dialogue speaks, the military action is clear, and the repetitive epithets become useful text rather than exotic relics." -"Atlantic Monthly "
"Fitzgerald's swift rhythms, bright images, and superb English make Homer live as never before...This is for every reader in our time and possibly for all time."-"Library Journal "
"[Fitzgerald's "Odyssey" and "Iliad"] open up once more the unique greatness of Homer's art at the level above the formula; yet at the same time they do not neglect the brilliant texture of Homeric verse at the level of the line and the phrase." -"The Yale Review
"
"What an age can read in Homer, what its translators can manage to say in his presence, is one gauge of its morale, one index to its system of exultations and reticences. The supple, the iridescent, the ironic, these modes are among our strengths, and among Mr. Fitzgerald's." -"National Review"
With an Introduction by Gregory Nagy

Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.

He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer - The Iliad and The Odyssey - are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.

In The Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller's tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.

We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact 'Homer' may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps 'the hostage' or 'the blind one'. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years' time.

Actually pretty good!
I bought this copy so I had a copy of the Iliad at home, but I originally read the Iliad translated by Richmond Lattimore and I liked that translation much better.Because Robert Fagles' version is basically free domain, the main thing you're buying here is the binding, and this does have very good binding. The pages are thin, which is fine unless you're looking to be able to hilight sections, but pen or pencil is fine.On the front there's a non-removeable "sticker" that says "the epic story of Troy" but I find that to be inaccurate and misleading, since this is not the full story, just what we have left of it.Overall though, this is a great buy and probably exactly what you're looking for.I gave this four songs but if I was able to do 3 1/2 I probably would

Really enjoyed the forward

The Iliad is certainly a piece of literature that has stood the test of time - and with good reason. War has constantly been a feature of human society and the Iliad tells of all its horrors like few other pieces of literature. But the epic is more than just a war story - it's a story of human limits and mankind's (especially in the West) constant struggle to deal with the realities they create. I suppose one could respond that this epic is more involved with human potential but it is very hard to read either the character of Hector or Achilles as anything but a tragic character - as someone who paid dearly for his role as "hero" of Troy or Greece. This is not a great piece of literature because it projects heroic ideals that should inspire us, though this aspect of the epic has played its own important role, rather, it is a great piece of literature because just as the epic appears to throw those ideals up for lauding, it problematizes them - it illustrates their tragic consequences. The heroic individual who can single-handedly make a difference and the ethic of competition the epic oozes have played important roles in shaping Western history, but the Iliad is great because it draws out the ugly consequences these ideals can produce and the price one pays for holding them too close.

Fagles' translation - for all I can tell - is an excellent one. I know no Greek (Sanskrit was my "classical" language) but the power of Fagles' rendering is palpable throughout (especially in the masterful first book).

I have read many other translations since the review was originally posted, including Pope, Lattimore, Fitzgerald, Lombardo, Rees and Rieu. After reading them all, Fagles' style still holds up, but I also very much enjoyed Lombardo's more modern colloquial style. Rees was a bit of a pleasant surprise to me as well and I would certainly recommend it. As for Lattimore, it is a helpful tool if you're trying to translate the Greek on your own (which I am) as it is hyper accurate in style, but a price is paid in such an approach as I find his translation too awkward to read for pleasure (again, this is just my subjective opinion). Pope's version is clearly the most accomplished in terms of poetry, but is not always easy to follow given the demands of rhyming verse. As for Fitzgerald, it's clear he has a sense for the poetry of the epic and there is much power in his translation - I liked it very much. That said - if I had to choose all over again, I would probably choose either Fagles or Lombardo.

In terms of materials to add to one's understanding of this great and complex epic - try Simone Weil's essay, "The Iliad, or the Poem of Force", Shay's book, "Achilles in Vietnam" and, more basic, Griffin's, "Homer".

Fagles does the best job of balancing all of the different elements in Epic Poetry. As always, there are going to be sacrifices and adjustments in the language, but Fagles keep it to a minimum while balancing the semantic content/poetic form. The introduction written by Knox is a great introduction for any newcomer. It’s key to really digesting the poem and its significance in Greek society and beyond.

The details (gory) of military confrontation. The pensive thoughts of a warrior. The rallying of troops.

Respect for the body of a slain soldier. Vindictive punishment of your enemy, salvage of their armor as a trophy.

An impenetrable fortress. The wills of the many gods, who insert themselves in the conflict of one side (Greeks) or another (Illians).

Worth reading; a classic! Now, on to the Odyssey!

Reviewing and rating The Iliad and The Odyssey, both being among the oldest existing written works from Europe, and which continue to hold influence on Western literature, makes it almost unfair to judge with a contemporary mindset. The embraced ideologies, i.e. philosophies, religions, principles, and aesthetics that have influenced any given literary period, including any accepted or required structures or styles for a story, have evolved over thousands of years. Estimates indicate these two epics were written sometime between 1200 BC and 850 BC. Many contemporary readers will simply dismiss The Iliad or The Odyssey after reading only a few lines, finding them too complicated or confusing to embark upon. The differentiation of mortals from gods and goddesses is not immediately made clear in some translations—just names given. Redundant descriptions like “winged fowls” or a reference to Hades, Zeus, Calypso or a Muse can quickly lose the interest of an average contemporary reader. The repetition of words and phrases, where the author or authors (Homeric question considered) tried to duplicate the telling of these epics as they were originally sung by bards hundreds of years before into written epics, can also be off-putting, especially among the many translated interpretations over the years. How I might have rated either of these two epics had I lived and read them when they were first written is impossible to say. Having read a 20th century English translation of them within the current literary period of the 21st century, I give five stars without hesitation. After a little research, I chose Robert Fagles’ translation written in unrhymed iambic pentameter or blank verse, a style originating in the 16th century, for the best balance of accuracy and readability. I didn’t care for the popular translations by Alexander Pope, who translated both epics into heroic couplets—a form of rhyming poetry that came about in the 17th century—eloquent as they may be written. Richmond Lattimore’s translations are perhaps the most accurate English translations, attempting to maintain the dactylic hexameter in which the original epics were written. Homer’s epics were simply his written retelling of stories that minstrel poets had been singing for centuries before his time. I suppose translators are simply doing the same thing in their own writing style. When you hear someone detail an event that took place and then hear the same event recounted by someone else, one person’s version may appeal to you more than the other, right? In any case, The Odyssey was my favorite between the two, though both were exciting—sometimes emotional—great stories.

The Iliad has always been one of my favorite books. More people should read the classics of western civilization; sadly the schools no longer teach how to think but what to think.
