- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2015This is a very good book even if it has become out of date due to recent finding. I love maps. I guess the visual aspects help me understand history through the changing borders. This is the cause of so much strife in world in our modern world. So it applies to the why of events that take place.
This book starts with the "birth" of man and moves forward fine their. I purchased it originally because I wanted to understand the outcome of the colonial period. But once I started looking at it, I couldn't get my nose out. Each map delineates important changes and why they occurred. It is an evocative way to learn history.
I recommend this book for anyone from grade school on up as a way to explore history in a visual and memorable way. It puts events into an order and context.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2014If you go all the way back to the supercontinent, Pangaea–showing how the land masses separated from it and assembled in the configuration that we now know as the map of the world–you are certainly ambitious in the scope of your study. McEvedy is ambitious and, in a study that contains extensive use of maps–every facing page, in fact–he creates an integrated whole, without it being tedious or belabored. It's a very interesting and unique perspective on African History.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2020A general overview kind of look. A good starting place for deeper research into the history of Africa.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2022nice book
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2018This amazing book will make you cry, will make you angry, and leave you with a real taste of history.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022The information is ok but the maps are all in just a couple of colors which makes them not the most informative of aesthetically pleasing

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
If you are interested in the world history in general and in Africa's history in particular, this book is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The text & maps connect effortlessly
An excellent snap-shot of the African continent in its entirety. It is well condensed with lucid explanations & the supporting maps add immense value. The end-to-end & “evolutionary” approach made the reading experience comprehensive. The only jarring feature is the remark describing Cambyses as “half-mad” on page 28 which appears rather out-of-context & is possibly a reflection of some bias against the Persian civilization. Compared, however, to the overall reading experience this seems a minor aberration.
The Order was efficiently executed & the product delivered in excellent condition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Klarheit fehlt
