Indian Art (Oxford History of Art) 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Combining a clear overview with fascinating detail, Mitter succeeds in bringing to life the true diversity of Indian culture. The influence of Islam on the Mughal court, which produced the world-famous Taj Mahal and exquisite miniature paintings, is closely examined. More recently, he discusses the nationalist and global concerns of contemporary art, including the rise of female artists, the stunning architecture of Charles Correa, and the vibrant art scene.
The very particular character of Indian art is set within its cultural and religious milieu, raising important issues about the profound differences between Western and Indian ideas of beauty and eroticism in art.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2010My professor insists we read this book as a foundation for our Indian Vernacular course. She has read most text books on the subject and insists this is the only one that is accurate and gives and appropriate survey of Indian Art.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2018better condition than i expected.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2014The author begins with the assertion that "There is a need for a reassessment of the way in which we look at, and talk about, Indian art. The interesting question is not what Indian art shares with western art, but how it differs from it." There was a great deal more varied information in this book than most surveys of Indian art; for instance, the survey ends in the 20th century, not with Mughal painting as some similar books do. I'm not certain but I believe the author is perhaps Indian himself, and as such brings a unique perspective to an interpretation of the subject.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021The copy I received may be an unauthorized printing. The paper quality is not glossy like all other Oxford History of Art books (I own around 11 others from the same series), and the images are grainy. The written material is still clear, but I suspect the book may deteriorate faster.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2005I purchased this book for my own enjoyment and to supplement the required readings for my Asian Art class. It is a visual delight, inspiring, and highly informative as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Partha Mitter's lucidly written 'Indian Art' contrasts most of the books written in unnecessarily difficult academic language of art
In spite of spending almost his entire life in academia, Prof. Partha Mitter's lucidly written 'Indian Art' contrasts most of the books written in unnecessarily difficult academic language of art. This brief writing on Indian Art is invaluable to all kind of people ranging from laymen to art students and academicians.Being a layman I was suggested to read this book and I am reading this book for 3rd time now as I am writing the review. Mostly highlights on Architecture, sculpture and painting from ancient subcontinent to modern practices happening in India.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indian art
Il libro è ben fatto, naturalmente per chi ha già conoscenze dell'arte indiana e dell'inglese. Fondamentale la presenza delle foto e del linguaggio dettagliato e specifico per l'arte indiana, specie in sanscrito con diacritici.

3.0 out of 5 stars poor quality paper/images
I hadn't bought one of this Oxford series of art books for quite a few years. Very disappointed to see a big decline in paper quality and quality of the illustrations. One of the main reasons I buy art books is to enjoy high quality reproductions of wonderful art, even if rather small. I will never buy one of this series again.
