ABOUT 90% OF BOTH VOLS ARE REPLETE WITH CLASSICAL COMPOSERS/TERMS- NOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR- BUT STILL OK AND A GOOD READ.

I find this book to be a welcome page-turner to browse and find some interesting tidbits...also to get a condensed history on major developments or composers in several pages...only detriment found so far was no listing for Jean Cras whose CDs I came across at the late great Tower Records outlet.

I had the same issue as "Amazon Customer" dated Oct 27, 2014. I ordered the 2-vol set from usedbooks123, and ended up receiving only Vol. 2. I've just re-ordered from another seller, and it's going to be a hit-and-miss too.

On www.amazon.ca, there are two separate product items under this title -- one just indicates the title and does not mention one or two volumes, and the other item indicates just Vol. 2. So, the first one is ambiguous as well.

Amazon should straighten this all out.

It comes in 2 volumes. I ordered it and only got vol 2. Item description should include which volume it is if it is only one of them.

This set of two books has everything. From Beethoven's Sonatas, to who was Beethoven, to what's a Sonata and many many others. Pumped up with 2000 pages of music knowlledge, this Encyclopedia of Music, is a must for every musician as well as anyone who is a lover of music. It's great and it certainly helped me for the preparations of my studies in the area of Music. I give it 5 stars, how could I do otherwise ?

Two illustrated volumes. Fascinating. Read about Wagner as my first entry - discovered that my favourite "Tannehauser" occasionally tends into "banality" and is a "transitional" work. I suppose that describes my life fairly well too, so no surprises there. Internet chatter will be more pointed, but the pithiness of an Oxford Companion will entertain endlessly. In fact, an Oxford Companion to Amazon reviews would certainly be useful to winnow the chaff.

Ordered the 2-book set as advertised by World of Books. Received just Vol.1 - they blamed the publishers for an "ISBN mismatch", which means I will never see Vol.2. So OK for Bach and Beethoven, but not Stravinsky or Tchaikovsky.

How is such a mess-up possible these days?

WoB did give a full refund, but I ask you - one volume of a 2-vol set???

2.0 out of 5 stars Only one volume received ...

... so a two star review. This seems to be a common problem and is the reason why it's taken me so long to order it. I had hoped that under Prime and Fulfilled by Amazon it would have been checked before despatch; it obviously didn't happen.

The volume I have received is large and heavy, with plenty of photos and illustrations. It would have been a four-star review if I had received the whole book.
