Art of Edo Japan: The Artist and the City 1615-1868 Paperback – April 27, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
This beautifully illustrated survey examines the art and artists of the Edo period, one of the great epochs in Japanese art. Together with the imperial city of Kyoto and the port cities of Osaka and Nagasaki, the splendid capital city of Edo (now Tokyo) nurtured a magnificent tradition of painting, calligraphy, printmaking, ceramics, architecture, textile work, and lacquer. As each city created its own distinctive social, political, and economic environment, its art acquired a unique flavor and aesthetic. Author Christine Guth focuses on the urban aspects of Edo art, including discussions of many of Japan’s most popular artists—Korin, Utamaro, and Hiroshige, among others—as well as those that are lesser known, and provides a fascinating look at the cities in which they worked.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2012If you're looking for a book that is a overview of the Edo period's history and art; this is a great book. Some parts reminded me of reading a textbook, which is my only complaint. The pictures of varying art styles are detailed and plentiful. The book starts with a historical overview than divides into the different regions of art during the period. And the back has a handy timeline of historical events divided by region. Very useful and interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the topic
A engaging book that gives a good overview of the time period - I finished it feeling \I had a good introduction to the art and culture, and a idea of where to go to further my knowledge. Well structured and easy to follow. Very well illustrated - even the smaller images are really clear. Overall, a book I would recommend.
