Throughout the Middle Ages crusading was justified by religious ideology, but the resulting military campaigns were fueled by concrete objectives: land, resources, power, reputation. Crusaders amassed possessions of all sorts, from castles to reliquaries. Campaigns required material funds and equipment, while conquests produced bureaucracies, taxation, economic exploitation, and commercial regulation. Wealth sustained the Crusades while material objects, from weaponry and military technology to carpentry and shipping, conditioned them.
 
This lavishly illustrated volume considers the material trappings of crusading wars and the objects that memorialized them, in architecture, sculpture, jewelry, painting, and manuscripts. Christopher Tyerman’s incorporation of the physical and visual remains of crusading enriches our understanding of how the crusaders themselves articulated their mission, how they viewed their place in the world, and how they related to the cultures they derived from and preyed upon.
 
A note to readers: the grey-shaded pages throughout this volume look at the Crusades in detail, exploring individual themes such as food and drink, medicine, weapons, and women’s role in the Crusades. The title I have given for my review is taken from the words written by David Hume, who has condemned the crusades. Add the fact that even the Pope has -in 2000-apologized to the world in the name of the Catholic church for this bizzare experiment, one which lasted for almost 200 years ( or perhaps more, depending on how one views this project).
Tens of thousands of books have been written about the crusades. However, this one is different. It incorporates some new insights and material and Professor Tyerman has done a superb job in order to take the reader and transport him into the worlds of the crusaders. It is full of primary sources and in addition it is lavishly illustrated. In addition, it has mini- texts about various topics that call the attention of the reader. They include, for instance, short chapters on the Jews and the crusaders, the food the crusaders consumed, examples of meals consumed(for example the one on January 6, 1378 , when King Charles the Fourth has entertained emperor Charles the Fourth of Germany , and whose description includes three courses-each of ten dishes, followed by spice wine and a gathering of five tables of nobles plus another 800 'below the salt') , the art they created, their baggage, the various preachers who took part in this project, the world of medicine , the relics the crusaders brought back with them , the many manuscripts relevant to the topic ,not to mention the fact that this beautifully illustrated book has more than 170 photos and maps and more.
The thirteen captivating chapters which appear in this magnificent volume discuss in detail different aspects, concluding in a postscript about the crusades' importance. In it, the author claims that current Western scholarship focuses on memory, memorialisation, inter-faith and cross-cultural community relations race, popular religious belief, identity and gender and many more aspects.
It is a thought- provoking book which will be the standard book of reference about this (still) immensely popular subject.

Unreadable book. The author surely is highly knowledgeable about this topic. However, he indulges himself in using overly complicated language just to show his eruditeness. Composing sentences of twelve words of which eight are archaic or unusual destroys the writer’s message. To make it worse, the publisher decided to put chapters within chapters, so as a reader you a constantly lost. Rewrite and re-edit this book and publish it again, then it might be digestible.
