The Silk Roads continue to capture the imagination of the public, and, in 2014, a section of the land routes was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Yet there was no single "Silk Road." Instead, a complex network of trade routes spanned Afro-Eurasia’s mountains, plains, deserts, and seas. From silk to spices, religion to dance, traffic in goods and ideas was crucial to the development of civilizations through rich cultural interactions and economic activity.

Centered around the dramatic landscapes of the Silk Roads, this beautiful volume honors the great diversity of medieval Afro-Eurasian cultures. Each section—from steppe to desert to ocean—includes maps, a historical and archaeological overview and thematic essays by leading scholars worldwide, as well as sidebars showcasing objects that exemplify the art, archaeology and architecture of the Silk Roads.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An epic new book from traveller and curator Susan Whitfield" ― Geographical, The Royal Geographic Society

"
Silk Roads: People, Cultures, Landscapes is a wonderful addition to the literature on what is a huge subject—and rather like an old-fashioned encyclopedia." ― South China Morning Post

"It is a joy to wander through almost 500 pages of stunning photographs illustrating the landscapes, people and cultures of the Silk Road . . . . and to read information that is up to date, accurate and readable" ―
British Museum Magazine

"This beautiful publication honors the astonishing diversity in the way cultures advance and flourish not in spite of their differences, but because of them."  ―
Antiques Diary

"A superbly illustrated volume written by 80 scholars who, in short essays, tell the millennia-long story of the historic trade routes that criss-cross half the world, from Asia to Europe. The huge variety of the travelers and the merchandise along these complex trajectories is handsomely laid out in this delightful, informative and continually surprising work." 2019 Books of the Year ―
Arts Desk

“A vividly illustrated tome traces the cultural impacts of the Silk Road. . . . A treasure house of fascinating images and hard-won knowledge.” ―
Science

"Here is a lovely coffee table book on the Silk Roads, with splendid illustrations of maps, objects, peoples, arts and crafts, architecture, and landscapes. . . . [Whitfield] adds to her earlier contributions." ―
Journal of Historical Geography

"The many magnificent illustrations make one long to go travelling." 2019 Books of the Year ―
The Spectator

"
Silk Roads is a book to experience, rather than read . . . Beautiful, fascinating, simultaneously erudite and accessible." ― Asian Review of Books

"Sections on Christian monasticism in Africa and Asia and the emergence of lapis lazuli make compelling reading. At a time when global politics and economy are hit by uncertainty, this book emphasises how movement and exchange fostered economic activity and cultural and political ideas." ―
Arts Society

"Stunning maps and artifacts combine with evocative landscapes as well as troubling tales of plunder, serving as a timely reminder of the rich rewards of meaningful communication and candid cultural exchange within and between the continents."  ―
Traveller

"The value of this sumptuous book lies not in its decorative coffee-table desirability but because it serves to remind us that human difference and interaction is vitally necessary for progress. In an era marked by international wall-building and little compassion towards refugees and migrants, we would do well to remember this." ―
World of Interiors

"A beautifully illustrated, impressive publication. There is a wealth of materials and new ideas among its pages that will undoubtedly delight, intrigue, challenge, and inspire future research." ―
Oriental Ceramic Society Newsletter

The Scotsman

"Enlightening. Whitfield's skillfully crafted tales take readers on a journey back to the heyday of the Silk Road and enable them to relive its people's unusual existence." &;

The only silk road book I could find with lots of photos.
5 Stars
The only silk road book I could find with lots of photos.
I love reading history and I love traveling through it, the cities, culture and artifacts. Surprisingly, this was the only book I could find with a lot of photos (color at that). So, this is my new favorite coffee table book! Susan Whitfield has produced a tour de force for folks like myself that like to view gorgeous pictures to supplement the narrative. Supremely happy 😊 I took the time to search for a book like this. I don’t know anything about Susan, but from my searching I found out she has written several books on the Silk Roads. Suffice to say, she must be well educated on the subject and is certainly passionate about it to have authored so many tomes. It truly is a wonderous book. I added some photos so you could see in part the detail and grandeur of this book. Apologies, for the sideways and uppsy-downsy of the attached picts. This is my first-time uploading photos in a review, but felt it necessary to better illustrate some of the goodies in this book. You’ll just have to turn your head or tablet a little or a lot to level things out.If you feel your not getting your intellectual itch scratched enough. Susan certainly has a number of other Silk Roads books that I know nothing about (for now). Or order Peter Frankopan’s highly reviewed treatise to fill in any gaps.Anyway, I hope my short & sweet review was of some benefit to my fellow vicarious Silk Road travelers. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Course I’ve been wrong before.. 😉 Stay safe & healthy!

Finally, the most important land trade route in the medieval world has a proper illustrated survey. This is a beautiful book, with brief but authoritative articles on all topics connected with ancient and medieval trade. The "maritime silk road" from south China via the Indian Ocean to the Near East is covered in the last few chapters. The book's hundreds of illustrations range from exciting new finds to classic photos going back over 100 years.
It brings back happy memories. The chapter on caravanserais reminded me of staying in a caravanserai in the Bamiyan Valley in 1974. The building was adobe. The bed was a built-up adobe platform with some old quilting. Lighting was a candle. Food was the incomparable bread, made from fresh-ground local hard mountain wheat, baked in a huge underground tandur oven the size of a small room. As a matter of fact, that very caravanserai or its next neighbor is illustrated on p. 127 of this book! Another familiar view on p 364 shows a mountain forest cleared of non-valuable trees, leaving the wild apples and others and opening the ground for grazing; I have been in such spots in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.
If you have any interest in the Silk Roads, you will want this book. If you have no interest, it will make you want to go and look.

A little disjointed. But, appreciate this book for what it is. The title is misleading. It covers trade routes spanning Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North Africa, not just the multi-branch Silk Road. There are many objects and images you have probably never seen, many of them. And short descriptions of cultures, religions, materials, geography, et al., a real kitchen sink. But if you are interested in the cultures and art across the wide expanse it covers in space and time, you will be entertained and informed.

I know very little about central Asia, so I thought this book would be a good start. I was wrong. The book has lots of wonderful pictures and is very wide-ranging in its content, but I have found that I need to consult Wikipedia on every page. Who are the Parthians? the Hephthlalites? the Xiongnu? A chapter on history would have been nice.

The book is very beautiful. Good pictures and colors. As so it is very nice for display on the tea table to start a conversation between guests and visitors. However it lacks deeper virw of the history of the place.

The book is of a very high quality and I expect to spend many happy hours going through it, again and again.
However, it did not arrive in perfect condition as the right side corners were slightly damaged. For such an expensive purchase, this was quite disappointing.

What a beautiful book! Not to be read from cover to cover in one sitting because of its layout - and size - it is nevertheless chock-a-block of priceless information on the different countries and areas that the Silk Roads covered, and written by emminent historians who really know their stuff. The photography is fantastic as well and takes you into the far flung corners of some little-known areas of the world.

It is not a coffee-table book in any sense of the phrase since there is too much to take in in the time allowed for such occasions, but as a reference source for those countries that are off the beaten track it is brillant.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in that lost area of the world and would learn some more in the comfort of their surroundings at home. Happy Reading!!
