The Platonic ideal of government.

Plato of Athens, who laid the foundations of the Western philosophical tradition and in range and depth ranks among its greatest practitioners, was born to a prosperous and politically active family ca. 427 BC. In early life an admirer of Socrates, Plato later founded the first institution of higher learning in the West, the Academy, among whose many notable alumni was Aristotle. Traditionally ascribed to Plato are thirty-six dialogues developing Socrates’ dialectic method and composed with great stylistic virtuosity, together with thirteen letters.

Republic, a masterpiece of philosophical and political thought, concerns righteousness both in individuals and in communities, and proposes an ideal state organized and governed on philosophical principles. This edition, which replaces the original Loeb edition by Paul Shorey, offers text, translation, and annotation that are fully current with modern scholarship. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Plato is in twelve volumes.

A very convenient form of publishing a book. Perfect for the collection of ancient philosophy, like all books in the series.

I own and am comparing the Bloom, the Grube, and this Loeb editions of Plato's Republic, and although each has merits, with the Bloom reading smoothly and with the rhythms of colloquial English, and the Grube being perhaps less skewed towards the translator's own biases--Bloom being well-known as conservative--the Loeb edition seems to me the all-around first choice. First, as I'm sure many but not all know, Loebs feature the text in its original tongue on the facing page, in this case Attic Greek. This tends to anchor the translation in verisimilitude. But also there's a demand for readability, because these are used extensively in schools. As someone who has studied Plato's Greek--though perhaps without the application it deserved--and who has continued his studies in Greek with the New Testament--and here decidedly without the devotion God's Word demands--I do have some minimal grasp of how the original maps into translation here. And as the graduate of a program--at St. John's College in Annapolis Maryland--where arguably The Republic is the one "inescapable book," I have some understanding also of Plato's Greek terms and the debates surrounding those terms. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the translations mentioned above, but if you want the best, and are willing to pay for a two-volume set, I recommend the Loebs unequivocally for Plato's Republic.

Definitely worth reading, but probably too much obfuscation to have any lasting significance. If nothing else, it shows the importance of avoiding meetings without a fixed agenda.

Nephew loved it. In college and just what he needed/wanted.

The text itself is exactly what you’d expect from a Loeb, but the book arrived a little dinged-up. This would’ve been fine if it was for me, but it is a gift. Wish it had arrived more intact!
