- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2010This is an excellent and very approachable reference for anyone interested in Islam. In a single volume I doubt one could find a better encyclopedia - especially at the price. The scholarship is up-to-date and very solid without being overly technical or geared toward the specialist (though it can certainly be helpful even for that group). In my studies of Islam I have found it invaluable - as it fits a convenient niche market between multi-volume (expensive) specialist encyclopedias and shorter versions that barely scratch the surface or help you move forward. Connected to this last point - each entry includes a short bibliography from which one can explore the topic further; there is also a very helpful lengthy bibliography at the end of the volume. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone interested in Islam.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2013It is basic encyclopedia about everything Islam, very informative.. but basic, it's an encyclopedia, nothing more.. nothing less. Although very well written and categorized.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2009There are many books with this title. This one is just the most recently published. Before buying, check them all, especially the older editions edited by Western scholars.
