Three famous Malinowski essays! Malinowski, one of the all-time great anthropologists of the world, had a talent for bringing together in single comprehension the warm reality of human living with the cool abstractions of science. His pages have become an almost indispensable link between the knowing of exotic and remote people with theoretical knowledge about humankind. An important collection of three of his most famous essays, Magic, Science and Religion offers readers a set of concepts about religion, magic, science, rite and myth in the course of forming vivid impressions and understandings of the Trobrianders of New Guinea.

Also by Malinowski and available from Waveland Press: Argonauts of the Western Pacific: An Account of Native Enterprise and Adventure in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea, Enhanced Edition (ISBN: 9781478602095). About the Author

Bronislaw Malinowski (1884-1942), Anglo-Polish anthropologist, was born in what was then Austrian Poland of a long line of Polish nobility and landed gentry. He was educated at the Polish University of Cracow, from which he received his doctorate in 1908 with the highest honors of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He also studied at the University of Leipzig and later went on to London, where from 1910 he was associated with the London School of Economics. From 1914 to 1918 Dr. Malinowski was a member of the Robert Mond Expedition to New Guinea and North Melanesia, and it was the research done on this expedition that was later published in Argonauts of the Western Pacific. In later years Dr. Malinowski taught at the University of London, at Cornell University, and at Yale University.

This book describes the author's personal observations plus he reviews other anthropologists observations on magic, religion, and science among people having no significant contacts with western civilization. The book uses language almost 100 years old. For example he calls those people - savages. Currently we call those islanders - indigenous people or aborigines. Truth is that many people living in Europe and America have similar attitudes toward magic, religion, and science as those islanders.

A very good book, but not for everyone. If you are looking for light reading for a Sunday afternoon, then look elsewhere. This book is almost academic. One of the best when comes to studying the correlation between magic science and religion.

The service was prompt, the book was in excellent shape. I would definitely order here again. All in all, very pleased with this transaction!

Michael W. Young's biography (2004)of Bronislaw Malinowski, with the Malinowski family's blessing and support, documents the anthropologist's personal and professional journey through life. Young's writing style positions, with a seemingly intended purpose, the reader in a distant, objective armchair pose while detailing the aspects of Malinowski's life. Considering the access Young had,the biography appears well-researched, and was fascinating to explore.

If you are ordering this book, I suspect you already know it is a classic. I teach it to 22 year old students of art and design, and they are as appalled as they are excited by it. In short: it's a highly compelling read when contextualized. Loaded with points of departure for further thinking, especially if you are interested in functionalism.

The book contains valuable information, I'm just personally not a fan of Bronislaw Malinowski's approach to writing and explaining his experiences and content.

This book can be incredibly boring because its written with a antiquated, prosaic tone. Malinowski's theories can at times seem transparent and naïve, but this is what you would expect from a collection of essays written roughly 50 years ago. Notwithstanding, If you're a patient reader and push through this work you will cull some very thought provoking knowledge from it.

Malinowski was a contemporary of Margaret Mead, but worked with a diff3ent set of Pacific Islanders. He discovered that the lines between the three fields were fluid and often overlapped. None of the three fields is black and white, there is a lot of gray at the borders. This is one of the most interesting books I've read. I highly recommend it.
