Exodus – Myth or History? Hardcover – Unabridged, January 1, 2015

Egyptologist and historian, David Rohl, has written a new book to accompany the “Patterns of Evidence” documentary movie. Exodus – Myth or History? lays out the archaeological and historical evidence for the Middle Bronze Age Exodus Theory that features so strongly in Timothy Mahoney’s film. This is a book for those who want to examine the evidence in detail … but it is also an absorbing and captivating read. The Archaeology Correspondent for the British newspaper The Daily Mail wrote, “David Rohl’s books have convinced me that he is one of the most brilliant and original minds now engaged in writing ancient history. If he hadn’t been a historian he would have been a terrific mystery writer.” David’s previous best-selling books have been published throughout the world (translated into 12 languages) … but his work is not so well known in the USA. Now, with this new release, published by Thinking Man Media, all that is about to change. Containing 416 pages of text,

I have been reading David Rohl’s material for a long time and, once again, he does not disappoint. I have read many books/material on this subject by Hoffmeier, Kitchen, and Woods. Although I enjoy their books, Mr. Rohl has a special gift given to him by God (although I’m sure he would disagree with me on the source). I believe part of the reason is because he keeps an open mind on most items and allows the evidence to take him wherever it leads. A truly successful chronologist/archeologist must take this approach in order to have any credibility with me.

The EXODUS book is broken up into four main categories:

Part 1: Creation of the Myth
Rohl does a great job setting the table for his book. In part 1, he examines why archeology has basically confined the Biblical stories of Joseph, the Exodus, the Sojourn and the Conquest into mythological status. The closed minds of these individuals can be traced to the incorrect dating of Ramesses II and the mis-identification of Shishak. This has led to archeologists placing the Semites arrival in Israel in the Late Bronze Age. As a result, the archeological record provides no evidence of these events.

Part 2: The Israelites in Egypt
Much of what’s in part 1 and part 2 were taken from Rohl’s ground-breaking book “A Test of Time” back in 1995. He has added a few more items for evidence that has come to light since he wrote that book. One of which is the independent research conducted in 2001 by David Lappin (University of Glasgow). In short, Lappin’s research proved that the New Chronology dates were fully supported by the new moon sequences. In contrast, the Orthodox Chronology was not supported at all. Lappin’s sequence dates provided accession dates of 1698 BC for Senuseret III and 1678 BC for Amenemhat III. This matched Rohl’s dates to a tee.

Part 3: The Exodus
The part 2 information allowed Rohl to identify Moses and the Pharaoh of Egypt (Dudimose). Armed with this knowledge, the pieces start to fall into place. In my opinion, the archeological data at Avaris is overwhelmingly in favor of Rohl’s findings. I am totally convinced that we have located the home of Jacob, his sons, and the very house of Joseph.
The details of Rohl’s opinion on the route of the Exodus was well researched. His opinion on the Reed Sea crossing (upper Balla Lakes at Yam Suph) is nothing new. It is one of several theories that have floated around for some time. The new satellite imagery offers substance to this theory though.
He actually contradicts himself somewhat on this issue. On page 167 he explains that Hollywood and the King James Bible erred when referring to Yam Suph as the “Red Sea.” It should have been the “Reed Sea” as per the original Hebrew. Fair enough. I’m ok with that. For me it doesn’t matter what exact body of water was crossed. However, on page 204, he admits that “Yam Suph may have referred not only to the Egyptian Sea of Reeds in northern Sinai, where the Miracle of the Sea took place, but also the Red Sea itself.” To me, this leaves open the possibility that the Kings James translators simply used the term ‘Red Sea’ to give you the actual body of water where the miracle took place (at least where they think it did) instead of the collective body of waters. Whether the Miracle of the Sea took place in the upper part of the Sea of Reeds (Balla Lakes) or the lower part of the Sea of Reeds (Red Sea), or somewhere in between makes no difference to me. Wherever the evidence leads. Rohl uses convincing evidence based upon the camps and days of journey (and satellite images) to locate it in the upper Balla Lakes area. However, until I see actual archeological evidence, this will remain a theory in my mind. Even Rohl, on page 191, admits the “’Miracle of the Sea’ awaits discovery.” I hope someone will soon investigate this particular area for archeological evidence. Perhaps Rohl can put this on his itinerary and write another book with his findings. Since this area is basically dried up (due to the Suez Canal) it should be easy to survey.
The “Wanderings” section was a delight to read. Rohl did a great job piecing together the Biblical narrative. I especially like the fact that he personally journeyed from camp to camp in an effort to follow the route of the Israelite’s journey. To me, this was very convincing.

Part 4: The Conquest
By placing the Israelites in the right timeline (Middle Bronze Age ~1400), the archeological evidence at Jericho, Bethel, Ai, Hazor, Shechem, etc fits absolutely perfect with the Biblical narrative. Rohl did a magnificent job proving the Biblical Minimalist wrong.

I highly recommend this book.

Contrary to a few of the critical comments made regarding "Exodus--Myth or History," David has published a superb work in accurately documenting the true events of the Exodus. The archeological evidence that proves a 1446 BC Exodus, is clear and easy to understand, provided a person does not see through the lens of Cognitive Bias.

I have used much of David's thorough research in writing my own book, documenting the historical and archeological evidence that proves that Moses is the singular writer of the Pentateuch. Any person who is sincerely seeking the truth regarding the events that took place at the Exodus, and the archeological evidence that proves these events took place--exactly as the biblical narrative describes them, will find David's work a valuable tool.

Had it not been for David's work, I would not have been able to write my own book, "Proving The Pentateuch," linking the events of the Exodus, with Moses as the singular writer of these texts, with the 46 Messianic Prophecies that Moses penned. Together these crucial pieces of evidence leave us with no doubt that Moses is the only author who could have written the first five books of the Bible.

Thank you, David!

If I were on a jury and handed evidence this succinct, not knowing who the "target population" was, I would vote for the truth which the evidence makes clear. When I can hold evidence in my hand, look at it, play with it, study it then it no longer belongs in the world of unicorns. David Rohl has brought that evidence into the court and proven his case. Exodus and it's people are not to be thrown on the dustbin of disbelief or made to sit in a corner with dragons (a nod to those Egyptologists that say Exodus, and by extension it's people, is a myth). Knowing who the population is and what it is about makes it that much sweeter.

I found David Rohl's books (yes I have them all now) by watching Patterns of Evidence. I would suggest to anyone seeking truth in it's unvarnished glory to watch Patterns of Evidence,
Patterns of Evidence: Exodus  and then to read Exodus: Myth or History?. The only axe Mr. Rohl has to grind is the obfuscations of the "Ivory Towered" academia that refuses to even consider the evidence of their own trowels! How in the world can you read the Ipuwer Papyrus and then stand there and say it was all in the authors imagination especially when it dates to the right time! How can you look at the evidence from Avaris and say it's has nothing to do with the Israelite Exodus, it's right there in the ground in front of you! It seems the attacks on Mr. Rohl's New Chronology smacks of roaches running for cover than for the truth to come out. The Exodus happened during the Middle Bronze Age, deal with it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking the truth of the Exodus. Yes it gets deep, sometimes it makes you cross eyed (even Mr. Rohl admits that for us non-Egyptologists) but stick with it to the end. You will be glad you did.

Not a biblical scholar. Have read the Bible somewhat familiar with the material being discussed. Found most useful the matching of the biblical history with Egyptian rulers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read

Worth a read. Thought provoking but I would have to question why Mr Rohl finds it difficult to accept Divine Intervention. True there may have been natural causes attributed for the plaques. These causes could just as easily have been used by the Intelligent Maker of this wonderful earth we live on. Accepting the Bible as being totally correct may be challenging for some and may require extra research to fill in the gaps. But altering time periods, eg. Length of Israel's sojourn in slavery to suit one's own chronology or the place of the crossing of the Red Sea because it just couldn't have happened there, isn't credible either. Either the Exodus was God driven or it wasn't. I prefer to believe that it was God driven and God's Name, Jehovah, (Meaning He Causes it to Become) was able to do what was written and recorded for our benefit and a warning for us today.

5.0 out of 5 stars History as it should be presented

Actually deserves 6 out of 5. Another Rohl classic, carefully research and years of diligent study of available sources. Nails the events of the events surrounding the Exodus and afterwards. A companion work to Rohl's last work the Lords of Avaris. Follow the Israelites from Avaris in the Delta, see them cross the Sea of Reeds, not the Red Sea. See them wend their way through Sinai. Follow them to the site of Ancient Petra and then across the Jordan. Then the fall of various ancient cities such as Jericho and Ai. Egyptian history neatly inserted into the new schema.
