- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2017This book of fewer than 100 pages is one of the easiest to follow that I have read on the subject. As a history major, I spent lots of time incorporating related studies in religion, literature, and culture. Most writers approach the subject of Greek gods in a genealogical fashion. Jackson’s approach is to classify them into groups according to the roles they performed. While he logically begins with the primordial deities followed by creation myths and the Titans, he rapidly moves on to the more familiar names of the Olympian Pantheon and some of the well-known myths. Homer’s gods of the underworld familiar to readers of the Odyssey are discussed as well as the sea gods like Poseidon so integral to a nation of seafaring inhabitants. Many religions were tied to the agricultural gods, Demeter, and the Eleusinian Mysteries. Jackson discusses Aesculapius, the god of medicine, as well as winged and sea creatures like the Sphinx, Minotaur, and Chimera.
This book is perfect for children in the middle grades who are intrigued with the folklore but do not want or need unnecessary details. It gives a solid foundation for readers who will later be better prepared to graduate to reading the classics. Recommended for readers ages eight and older.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2015I have always enjoyed Greek Mythology, but certainly have never “studied” it at the level that is possible in this book. A concise collection of descriptions of the primary deities of creation left my head spinning - the number of “children” born to Gaea… embodying many of the elements of the heavens and earth as we know them.
I read of the duplicity and cruelty vetted by these deities and think what we experience today is mild in comparison. I also find the numbers of “offspring” being 7,9 or 12 very fascinating; how much of my Christian “creation” history does the same. Getting to the Olympian Gods, I began to remember more of my scholastic studies. As as artist, I used many of them to reference the qualities and names provided my pieces. I also found of interest the fact that there were “myriad versions” of the history and stories.
I think the author perfectly articulates my thoughts on Greek mythology “Clouded with superstition, confusion and mysticism, Egyptian gods and goddesses have been reduced to cartoon icons we really don’t know much about.” Which makes it refreshing to know the author has a series of additional books to read should I want to know more about this fascinating topic.
Other than being discomforted by the odd twist of writing style, which does not mesh well with the topic or the balance of writing I enjoyed in the book, the author used in his discussion of Horus, I found the book a most worthy read.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2015I’ve been reading mythology books lately and I am always amazed when reading them. This book shows the different gods and goddesses of Greece. This book also explained the life of each god and goddess. This book developed my deep understanding and knowledge of ancient Greek mythology. Also, now I am more interested in reading mythology books. I am amazed at how this book is created because it is detailed until the last page. I won’t regret that I have this in my library. Great work!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015I'm one of those readers that Roy Jackson, the author, talks about who as had a fascination for Greek gods and goddesses since I was a kid. Instead of playing cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians, my brother and I played Cronos & Zeus. I know a little weird. I was happy to see by reading this book that we were not far off the mark. Crosos was the leader of the Titans and Zeus was a son that Mrs. Crosos hid from him because he had the bad habit of eating his kids whole. It was the only way to get them out of the way since they were immortal. Jackson's book is full of stories of the gods, goddesses, plus primordial deities. It comprehensive and a pretty darn fun book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2015This book took me back in time to literature such as Julius Caesar . It is well oriented and detailed explain the different generation of deities and their purpose, such as the Primordial deities, the Olympian deities etc. The book is full of mythological stories with surprising ending . It is fun to read , I like it
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2015What an interesting read! I was drawn to the length of this book as it is quite short and often one can get bogged down with rhetoric. Not so here. It was enjoyable, informative and quite humorous in parts. A great way to remind oneself of what you already knew and enhance your knowledge with more information of the next tiers (children of the gods) whose names ring bells but you would perhaps never have known their lineage before this.
