This is a bold reassessment of one of the pivotal points in British history. PJ O’Gorman analyses the sources for the period from Julius Caesar’s first forays into these islands to the invasion under the Emperor Claudius and the conclusions he reaches are nothing short of radical and call into question much of the accepted narrative of Roman invasion and conquest.

The author starts by showing that Caesar’s initial cross-Channel adventures were motivated not so much by seeking the glory of taming primitive savages but to gain control of an economic powerhouse. His treatment of the period leading up to the Claudian invasion and the invasion itself is even more shocking. Most significantly he argues convincingly that two of the most important Roman sources underpinning the conventional narrative are in fact Renaissance fakes and that their acceptance has distorted the interpretation of modern archaeological evidence. Meanwhile he reinstates a discounted British source. The result is a startlingly different version of Britain’s early history.

An important book on British history

An important book on British history
Wow! This book was really fun to read. It successfully argues that what we thought we knew, about Britain's Roman past, is codswallop! Even writing this, Elephants in Essex, Boudicca's spiked chariot and Agricola's record-braking romp all around the island, all sound ridiculous in hindsight.O'Gorman writes convincingly that Tacitus, and subsequently Cassius Dio, convenient appearance as the Tudors strove to be the new renaissance dynasty of Europe, before arrogantly and successfully tearing away from papal authority, was a cynical fabrication designed to hold the country within the Catholic church's authority. These traditional sources disappeared, just as quickly as they were 'discovered, after allegedly laying unmolested and unknown in a monastery's cellar for 1500 years, they served their purpose and vanished in odd circumstances - like fires.O'Gorman provides an abundance of evidence and footnotes, clear points and chronological signposting as to what actually happened - this kept me confidently engaged throughout the book. As a fan of all history, especially well-presented, heavily evidenced, and thought provoking alternative analysis, this book ticks all the boxes. I give it an unflinching 5/5

I've found this interpretation interesting although unlikely. Relying on Geoffrey of Monmouth's text isn't a good idea for presenting a new thesis about Rome and Britain. Geoffrey was writing fiction and very little of it is at all likely to be true. Geoffrey uses no source material in his tale and some of his conclusions are dubious at best. Still, it's an amusing fantasy (the new book) to read on cold winter's night.

It provides an examination of the relationship between Britain and Rome, challenging traditional views with new interpretations based on archaeological findings and Brittonic sources. It offers a comprehensive overview from Julius Caesar's invasions to Nero's reign, highlighting key events like the strategic failures of Roman campaigns and the significant alliance through marriage between Claudius's daughter and the British king Arivargus. It was a fun read.
