Stemming from Taliban and Al Qaeda, budding into Daesh, growing into ISIS and developing into IS, this fastest growing terrorist network shook the world to its core. The scale of its terrorist operations being global, it also became a terrorist organisation to have attracted the most media attention than any of its predecessors.Having occupied vast stretches of land as its territory, the leadership claimed the office of caliphate—successorship of the Prophet Muhammad. While this revived an almost obsolete area of academic interest, it also led the global media to brand the term of caliphate as a symbol of terror and violence. The last decade has seen a lot of journalistic and academic work on caliphate with added angles and viewpoints to the concept. It is unfortunate that most of the modern works on caliphate have only highlighted the terrorist tendencies of the IS caliphate and ignored the importance it holds in the collective psyche of the Muslim world. Some historians, taking advantage of a rejuvenated market, produced abridged versions of their previously detailed works on the topic of Islamic caliphate but decided to wrap up where the Ottomans packed up in 1924. Other scholarly works focused solely on the terrorist tendencies of the IS caliphate. In the realms of the media and the academia both, a caliphate carrying the banner of a peaceable version of Islam was deemed negligible. Founded in 1908 in the British-Indian town of Qadian, the Ahmadiyya caliphate has established Muslim missions in almost all countries of the world to promote the peaceable version of Islam. It ran parallel to the twilight years of the Ottoman caliphate, outlived it and was consistently active with its peacebuilding mission when the IS caliphate came to rise. If caliphate means successorship of Prophet Muhammad, and if it is meant to be a Muslim leadership in the service of Islam, then this book is an analysis of various models of Islamic caliphate; with special reference to the Ahmadiyya, the Ottoman and the ISIS.
