To begin with, the book was amazing!

It is a story about a young boy from Argos about 400BC who gets abducted and abused by Spartans.
He grew up hating Spartans as he is still a captive, he is looking to take revenge somehow so he would escape with his love and head to Egypt and from there to Persia, where he was taught that the Persians are evil people but then he grew up to like them and then he becomes part of their elite soldiers and then he would take his revenge from the Spartans.

This book is a beautiful story about vengeance, love and power. The author did a great job with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovers of ancient history:

I was completely invested in this story from the very beginning. (Starting with Alexander sacking a city? How could I not be?)
The author somehow uses a commanding, militaristic voice that simultaneously still expresses poetic moments brilliantly. There’s endless historical details scattered throughout, making this especially recommended for any history nerds like myself, and leaving me wondering how long the research for this story took. Each city and location felt real and rich and captivating. I could see the lay of the land perfectly. And the fight/battle scenes were something extra special. A perfect balance between seeing the fight from within, alongside the hero, but also from above, the movements and counter-movements crystal clear.
Another thing I loved was how capable everyone in the story was, there was not one easy victory on any side. No matter how much you like or dislike any of the characters, when you’re reading this book you know that they earned their position, and even if you haven’t seen them do anything yet, you know they can throw down.
I’ll try not to get into the plot too much, because, you know, spoilers, but I had been looking for this sort of story for a while now. So much is said about the Spartans (and I completely understand why, they are fascinating), but nowhere near enough is said about the Helots. I loved getting to see their lives and viewpoints on the page and getting to see inside the Agoge.
In addition to all of this, there is a heartwarming love story and a subtle mythic-feel coating everything.
