Carthage was the western Mediterranean’s first superpower, long before Rome, and her military history was powerful, eventful, and chequered even before her ‘Punic Wars’ against Rome. Although characterized in the surviving sources and modern studies as a predominantly mercantile state, Carthage fought many wars, both aggressive and defensive, before and in between the contests with the Roman parvenus. The Greek states of Sicily, above all Syracuse under its tyrants Dionysius the Great and then Agathocles, were her most resolute opponents, but in North Africa itself, in Sardinia, and later on in Spain she won—and sometimes lost—major wars. This is the first full-length study dedicated to these other wars which furthered Carthage’s interests for over half a millennium. The book is based firmly and analytically on the ancient sources, and among many insights is that Carthage, though usually considered a naval power, did more fighting on land than at sea and with more success.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[A] treasure trove of information... This is a book that anyone who has any interest in the time period should possess."
A Wargamers Needful Things

"Carthage’s Other Wars is a very good read for those with an interest in Classical Antiquity, and a reminder that the Romans were hardly the only imperialist warmongers of the ancient world."
StrategyPage

“Hoyos demonstrates his usual flair for discussion of maneuver and clash of arms, the elucidation of which is excellent, engaging, and thoroughly informative. […] This book will be valuable to anyone wishing to bolster their knowledge of the ancient world and its warfare, from beginners and undergraduates to seasoned experts who wish to add to their knowledge of Rome’s erstwhile main threat. It is therefore a worthy addition to any library devoted to ancient military history.”
Journal of Military History

Good read! This book focuses on the various wars fought between Carthage & the Greek city states located in Sicily & southern Italy. Talk about utterly ruthless! These people, both the Carthaginians & Greeks make the Romans (&Hitler/Stalin) look like a bunch of peaceniks! Constant warfare, enslaving of entire populations, slaughtering entire populations( including women, children, farm animals & family pets, roasting people alive inside of Brazen Bulls! What's not to like about this book! This work is as much about the history of Italian/Sicilian Greece as about Carthage. At one time, even during the "Golden Age Of Greece", two cities in Sicily, Syracuse & Akragas were actually wealthier & more powerful than Athens, Thebes or Sparta. Great history on a subject that doesn't get nearly as much attention as works on the Punic Wars. Great read!

Drawing on our limited, somewhat choppy, and often late written sources (as well as occasional archeological insights), Hoyos presents what we know about the wars that Carthage fought before (and in between) the more famous "Punic Wars" with Rome. The primary focus (simply because we have the most information about them) are the wars over the island of Sicily that Carthage fought against various regimes in the Greek colony of Syracuse.

While a topic like this necessarily involves some speculation, weighing the accuracy of our fragmentary sources, etc., the author does a good job of "showing his work" as it were, letting you know when he is speculating, what he basis his speculation on, what the sources really say even when he thinks they might be inaccurate, etc. Thus, you generally have the information you need in order to agree or disagree with him and to know what we can and can't know.

By necessity, and despite the author's best efforts, the book is dry at many points. There are also a LOT of people and places to keep up with, often with identical names, and you can't afford to forget who someone/somewhere is because they/it will likely come up again later. Thus, it is by nature a challenging read. Nevertheless, it provides valuable context for understanding the Punic wars and the rise of Rome specifically and the history of the Mediterranean world generally. If you are interested in classical civilization, Phoenician and/or Greco-Roman history, the intertestamental period, or even biblical backgrounds, this book may be worthwhile to labor through (and even enjoyable at times!), but for the average reader, its probably not one to put on your list. That said, I personally found it quite valuable and am glad I read it.

It is amazing how history continues to repeat itself. If we would study history more maybe we wouldn’t keep making the same mistakes. One town starts thriving and so some neighboring town attacks and takes what ever they had. It is a slow read (history) but worth it to understand the time and culture before the Roman Empire and the back story of Rome’s rise and fall.

Very interesting choice of subject matter. It's refreshing to read something about Carthage that's not just about the Punic Wars.

I recently started reading more books about Roman military history. I began to realize just how much my knowledge of Carthage was attached to Roman history, so when I saw this book, I put it near the top of my reading list.
This is a situation where I don’t know how to rate a book. It was very indepth about Carthage’s many wars in (and for) Sicily, but much less so about the Barcids’ conquests in Spain. This depth of information meant that the writing style was academic, which made it somewhat difficult to read for long periods of time. Through no fault of the author’s, Carthage’s history is full of repeated names, so it is sometimes difficult to follow when several generals have the same name (mostly without titles like “the Great” or suffixes to identify them).
All of this is why I find it difficult to rate. The book contained a lot of information about Carthage before its destruction - culture, military, politics, etc. - so I would rate it higher and recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the Mediterranean around the time of the early Roman Republic. But for the casual reader, I fear that this book would be “a slog” that could cause confusion as much as an increase in understanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book but flawed.

Whilst this is an interesting book it is spoilt for me by the authors adherence to the long discredited view that the Liby-Phonecian phalanx used Pikes ala the Macedonian phalanx. If you can ignore that then it's a good book about Carthage and it's military outside of the well documented Punic wars. Without this view on pikes it would have been a 5 star but for me it's too fundamental a view to be ignored.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay but a little light (unsurprisingly)

Although this does not cover the Punic Wars, a lot of the book is set in Sicily prior to the first Punic War, some set in Spain in the aftermath of the first Punic War and the rest on Carthages interactions in North Africa. I had hoped this would have a bit more detail on campaigns, war and the Carthaginian methods of waging war but this was not the case.
Unfortunately, as the author readily admits, documentary evidence is very limited. Most documents were written by their enemies (Greeks or Romans) and nothing really remains of their own.
As I say, okay but I don't think I will be re-reading this book.
