5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
An interesting book which gives classical music context. For me, pictures/illustrations would be a distraction! Buy if you want plenty of information!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I had expected
There is a book of similar name by Collins which was illustrated and that is where the similarity stopped. There is little by way of illustration. The pages are made of poor quality paper. The text cramped which makes unpleasant reading. I wanted to give it one star but thought to gives star at least for the attempt of content - though inspiring the presentation may be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neither comprehensive or completely reliable
A curiously unsatisfying volume. It's good on the broader history of the music and theory, but where individuals are concerned seems to suffer from ruthless editing and questionable proof-reading.
You may often find that composers and conductors you believe should be held in esteem are given the short shrift of a paragraph or two or completely excluded, while you'll read passages such as the one which has long dead Lili rather than Nadia Boulanger teaching into the latter half of the twentieth century with incredulity. Oh well, perhaps I should be glad that she's even mentioned.

1.0 out of 5 stars It stops appr. 1 centrury ago, 1920. ...
It stops appr. 1 centrury ago, 1920. Oxford often lies ahead 1 century. I was interest in 20th century, CONTEMPORARY classical music, but no, Wagner is already quite new for the authors.
