About the Author

Trevor Naylor is a Yorkshire author and traveler who has spent all of his career in the field of books. Publishing has taken him to more than 90 countries, but he regards Egypt as his second home, the place he has returned to live and work in for over 30 years. He has explored every corner of this fascinating and friendly country during that time and has written several books. He is the author of Cairo Inside Out (2017), Egypt Inside Out (2019), and Living Normally: Where Life Comes Before Style (2007) and is co-author of A Roving Eye: Head to Toe in Egyptian Arabic Expression (2016).

Welcome to my author page and my news - I am so pleased announce my new book for 2024, publishing in October by Thames and Hudson. It is called RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX - Quiz Like an Egyptian, and is a unique Puzzle Book to help readers of all ages and skills to learn about Egyptology. Much more detail to follow, but suffice to say this is no trivia book....it is built to be fun and yet testing to the readers. It follows my 2023 book, ANCIENT EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPHS ILLUSTRATED, published by Amber Books, a truly magnificent book that aims to give access to understanding, enjoying and reading this millennia old visual language. Available now..and loved on Goodreads.. 'I thought this was fantastic. It is a simplified index, detailing each symbol and their meaning, with some real world examples as well. Truly fascinating. I loved it'.

Now that I live in beautiful Yorkshire I am also going to be writing about this greatest of all counties, having been commissioned to write a guide for Jonglez Publishing in their special series of books. SECRET YORKSHIRE will be published in 2025.

As a travel and culture writer I like to tune into the things I see and sense around me wherever I am each day. In all my illustrated journeys it is the combination of words and photography that come together to give the reader a sense of actually being there. Whether in the pages of the widely praised CAIRO INSIDE OUT, the fun look at peoples UK homes in LIVING NORMALLY or the pocket size views in EGYPT A VISUAL EXPLORER GUIDE, the proverbs of Egypt in ROVING EYE (and my biggest travel book of all - the beautiful EGYPT INSIDE OUT) I feature people, places (or both) with the intention of bringing the real world into your hands. I try to create a book experience which is a journey unlike others.

Now based in the UK I am travelling the world selling books to booksellers around the Middle East and beyond, and whilst engaged in this I am also looking for new ideas for beautiful books to write and create..watch this space! Yorkshire now on my radar....

From the illustrations to the text, I found this highly readable and very informative. I’ve read a few books on hieroglyphs over the years and this one was one of the better ones. How it was laid out – from format to groupings – invited you to read and learn as you went. The background given for each hieroglyph was interesting and had great detail with the language geared for anyone, not just an expert or scholar on the subject.

I would love more – an encyclopedia really – laid out in just this way, including any and all symbols. Having interpretations of statues and monuments – actually working through the hieroglyphs and their translation – would be icing on the cake.

I read the e-book version which I think may not have given the illustrations justice so will be looking for a print copy…
