Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe: Heinkel HE 162 (Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe Close Up) Paperback – February 3, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
As the competition progressed and Germany’s resources dwindled, it became clear that an advanced jet fighter was not what the Luftwaffe needed. A new concept was formulated: a cheap, basic fighter equipped with a single readily-available turbojet. The advanced fighter contest was temporarily shelved and Volksjäger was born.
Swept metal wings, V-tail and HeS 011 engine swapped for straight wooden wings, conventional tail and BMW 003 engine, Heinkel’s fighter design was rushed through a brief selection process before Adolf Hitler himself placed an order for 1,000 a month. A massive effort saw the He 162 go from blueprints to flying prototype in less than two months. But was it a triumph of engineering prowess or a costly white elephant which hastened the end of the war? Using contemporary documents, author Dan Sharp explains and explores the development history of this fascinating and controversial late-war ‘secret project’.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024Building a few versions of this aircraft and this book is a wealth of information!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024This book is meticulous to a fault. It is very thorough on its apparent sole purpose, the development history. The author covers so much minituae on the development politics and prototype variants and in-fighting ove this and that. I bought the book on impulse seeing the cover and found virtually no information on the actual He 162 that actually saw some combat on an unknown number of flights in April 1945. So the old saw is true: you can't judge a book by its cover. Even in the Summary section there is no picture of an operational plane except three color photos of one aircraft in the hands of RAF evaluation pilots. I would have been placated with a mere page or two of its short life as an operational fighter which apparently lasted only 10 to 14 days according to the WikiWand page. Great book if only Amazon would show the table of contents like in the old days of 2015. I am sure those who knew the nature and narrow scope are delighted. He is a great researcher and competent writer. Live and learn. Cheers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2021The Heinkel He 162 has been previously documented in the literature on German aircraft of World War II and early jet aircraft, and it was surely the only advanced Nazi jet fighter design to reach the hardware phase before the end of World War II. In this book, Dan Sharp chronicles the early design and development of the He 162, starting with a discussion of early Heinkel designs for a new-generation jet fighter to supplant the Messerschmitt Me 262 (Heinkel built the world's first jet fighter, the He 280, which was passed on in favor of the Me 262, but that's another story) before describing all the contenders for the 1944 Volksjäger contest for a lightweight jet fighter, including lightweight designs conceived by Heinkel as part of the P.1073 fighter project series, and he briefly describes the He 162 flight test program, and operation career, before discussing planned variants of the He 162 that were not built, including pulsejet-powered aircraft and butterfly-tailed proposals with backswept and forward-swept wings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at this quirky late-war aircraft
I have long been a fan of the quirky little Hs162 series of aircraft, including the various experimental versions and this book provides a fresh look at these aircraft and, while I have lots of detailed references on these planes, this book still provides some interesting material and I am happy I took a chance and bought it, sight unseen.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT NEW INFORMATION
these books are pretty good - sadly my first copy was packed somewhat damaged ( the back cover slightly torn with a few pages torn likewise too - in the amazon packet) but, the exchange process seemed to work quickly. I now possess a book on this fascinating aeroplane that features new illustrations and new information I had not seen before so - I am very happy indeed
