Die Provinzgrenzen des Römischen Reiches an der Donau und den Alpen erfuhren einen bisher nie dagewesenen Ansturm germanischer und sarmatischer Stämme. Die daraus resultierenden Kriegsereignisse in den 60er, 70er (und frühen 80er) Jahren des 2. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. bilden den geographischen und zeitlichen Rahmen für einen äußerst bedeutenden Abschnitt der Karriere des Pertinax. Dieser hatte zwischen 167 und 180 n.Chr. zahlreiche Ämter in den Provinzen Rätien, Noricum, Pannonien, Dakien und Moesien inne. Die Zuspitzung der Konflikte erwies sich beruflich für Pertinax von Vorteil. Ritterständischen Militärs wie ihm waren wegen der erhöhten militärischen Bedrohung von nun an Karrieren möglich, die ihnen bisher verschlossen waren. Durch seine unzweifelhaft großen militärischen Fähigkeiten gelang Pertinax ein schneller Aufstieg bis in das direkte Umfeld des Kaisers Marc Aurel, der Männer wie ihn dringend für militärische Kommandos benötigte. Nach einer Betrachtung der Quellenlage werden im Hauptteil zunächst die ersten Lebensjahre und die frühe Karriere des Pertinax skizziert. Anschließend erfolgt der Versuch, die Ursachen und den Ablauf der Markomannenkriege und parallel dazu Pertinax' Karrierestufen in ihnen zu rekonstruieren. Hierbei wird auf die wichtigsten Faktoren, Probleme und Fragestellungen dieses Themenkreises eingegangen.
