Ajanta Cave No. 1: Documented According to the Ajanta Corpus of Dieter Schlingloff (Photographic Compendium, Ajanta Narrative Painting) Hardcover – May 4, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
The monograph contains 15 Buddhist legends painted on the walls of Ajanta Cave No. 1 in the late
fifth centry CE. All episodes of the stories are arranged in the same way as the painters painted them.
It is a compendium of the ancient paintings systematically documented for the first time with colour
photographs.
The monograph covers 14 of the total 15 narrative paintings of Cave 1. It has at least one photo of
every episode of the narratives. It has systematically arranged material in accordance with the Ajanta
corpus of Dieter Schlingloff.
There is summary of all the 15 legends. The picture descriptions are based on up-to-date research on
each painted episode. There is a concise bibliography of the nearest textual concordance of the
narratives in the Buddhist scriptures.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Singh has spent nearly fifteen years to study the Ajanta caves in detail. Prior to this,
he has published, produced, or edited 2 monographs, 11 research papers, a CD-Rom, and 5 videos on
Ajanta. The contents of this monograph is meant for academic libraries, educators, students, and
general readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2020I purchased this book not on Amazon, but from a seller on Abebooks, an Amazon subsidiary. The book states that it is printed on demand, it is 'casebound', and does not state that it has been printed on acid-free paper. However, it seems quite sturdy, and the paper is evidently of good stock, fairly heavy weight, and it is matte-surfaced, which, for reproduction of artwork, I prefer to glossy.
This publication truly delivers, exceeding expectations, on the author's promise to provide an accurate, thorough, and high-quality treatment of the narrative murals which survive at Ajanta.
About the layout of the book and the compositions of the photographs (of the composition in the murals): Especially of import for the student of Ajanta artwork, as stated by the author, is to see the entire representation of the narrative on the wall, not just details and extreme close-ups of heads, such as have been sought by souvenir hunters in the past. Mr. Singh here leads us through his sequential documentation of all the narratives, giving wide-angle views followed by several sections, to illustrate each one. This allows us to see the details in their greater context; which context, the narrative, I must assume to have been the overarching concern of the designers. And it is the overall composition which carries the full impact of the artist's vision and achievement. Indeed, Mr. Singh's integrated presentation points up the fact that they were primarily concerned with the 'big picture'. And for them, that picture extended beyond the world of visual representation, to include religious and philosophical lore, ritual activity, social environment, etc., thus, Mr. Singh has provided an effective accompaniment to the paintings in his appendices, which include an exhaustive bibliography of textual sources that have been used for interpretation of the fragmentary scenes present on the walls.
In summary, I would say that this is the very best resource, now available to the public, for appreciative study of Ajanta mural narrative in its artistically visual aspect, where Mr. Singh has given us quality and quantity together. The exposition is tasteful, and complete. For anyone with a deep interest in the representational work of Ajanta artists, here is the 'next level' ; this publication is not for the 'coffee-table tourist' ; you can see here excellent reproductions of Ajanta's walls with their unique painted stories.
I for one, hope that more volumes of this caliber will be brought out by Mr. Singh, in continuation of the strong precedent which he has set here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book full of high quality pictures with neat and tidy details
I bought the book out of my growing interest in Ajanta paintings and also for the purpose of reference for the project I am working on. I am pleasantly surprised to find all the information I wanted at one place in nicely arranged visuals accompanied by well organised details. There is not so much of information around about the paintings in Ajanta.
I thank the author for putting a great deal of efforts in the book and making it available for the world. A must buy for all Ajanta fans and lovers!
