Ancient Times, a History of the Early World: an Introduction to the Study of Ancient History and the Career of Early Man Hardcover – January 1, 1916

3.5 3.5 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

Vol. 2 of a 2 Vol. Set. An introduction to the study of ancient history and the career of early man. It was the purpose of the author to make this book sufficiently simple to be put into the hands of a first year high school student. A great deal of labor was devoted to the mere task of clear and simple statement and arrangement. In dealing with each civilization, a sufficient framework of political organization and of historical events has been laid down; but the bulk of the space has been devoted to the life of man in all its manifestations: society, industry, commerce, religion, art and literature.

Absolutely fascinating record of the early Mediterranean history. needs better editing: too many typos, but well organized and highly informative..questions after each chapter are an interesting approach, designed as a history text. I will most likely read it again in the future.

Some text seems to be missing. The table of contents, for example. Other missing text can’t be determined. This is an older book by a very distinguished expert, but reflects his interests - Egypt and Mesopotamia. There’s no way it would reflect more recent scholarship.

None of my early studies start in Europe...
I am 10 pages in and still, not 1 mention of Africa or the harpoon or papyrus, which originally only grew in 3 places all in Africa proving Africans were the 1st writing...
If the polar caps melted "as south as Long Island", says Breasted, how come no mention of life or civilization below the equator, you know, where the polar caps didnt effect?
It wasnt the Orients who conquered Egypt, the Assyrians, these people stole a legacy from the great African Dynastys...
No people came into Egypt teaching and educating, Egypt was exporter not importer of knowledge, literature, medicine, domestication, etc

This book has none of the information one needs in a history book. There are no table of contents, no pictures, no pagination! There is no indication of who the publisher is, and no index of subjects and persons. If you are going to copy a book, then COPY IT! Don't take it upon yourself to edit a classic work, or any other for that matter. Shame on the person (s) who published this book. Obviously he or she was only out for money and not for the integrity of books and ideas.
Such we don't need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and easy to read

I'd recommend this book as one of the most interesting I've ever read on the history of mankind. Perfect for teenagers but also perfect for adults. He doesn't talk down to you, doesn't use difficult words where simple ones will do, and keeps you wanting to turn the pages and learn more. He explains how man went from the stone age to the iron age, how the written word evolved and from where, the links between man's gods of 5000 BC to those of today, and more, and more, and more.

Unfortunately my Kindle version doesn't have the maps and pictures he frequently refers to, so I'd recommend an atlas to hand when reading it or you could miss out on quite a bit.

Why do Kindle books never include the maps or pictures? Would someone explain please? Otherwise, the book seems very interesting?
