Around the turn of the 15th century, a Dutch Master called Hieronymus Bosch painted a very strange painting. According to modern thinking, it is perhaps psychedelic. It is a triptych depicting the Garden of Eden, earthly delights, and Hell. Virtually nothing is known about the man known as Hieronymus Bosch. St. Anthony’s Fire paints some possibilities to explain the man and what drove him to paint so bizarrely.

As an artist who once dabbled in oils, I gained a fresh appreciation of the creative process of the artist described so well by the author of "St. Anthony's Fire". Art history books never miss this unique style of Bosch. So by reading this book I learned new aspects of Bosch's process. Scott Skipper uses dialogue like a master to move Bosch in and out of adventure, near death, and romance. A fast but very satisfying read.

The fictional story of Bosch is very creative and all of the clues fall into place nicely. Skipper spins a great story with detailed characters, beautifully described settings, and an apparently extensive knowledge of the Dutch masters in art. It was a very fun read and left me wanting to read more - always a good place to end a story.
