Cleopatra is an example. We know little of the true facts about her even though she was an important historical figure. She was the last Pharaoh of Egypt, the last Greek who ruled this country. She influenced Julius Caesar and Mark Antony and the Emperor Augustus who handled her legacy. This is because her history was composed by her enemies, people who hated her because of her power and the way she used it. This history book tells us as much as we know about her, and it is fascinating, the truth rather than the fictions seen in films.

Just what I was looking for. A short, concise history of Cleopatra. Even in this short history I learned a lot. This is my first "Short History" book but it will not be my last. These kind of books allows you to get a glimpse of a person or event and then you can decide if you want to dig further.

I am pursuing more of these books. Already have FDR Marcus Aurelius.

I am a fan of Hourly History but they have really outdone themselves on this one. They have used the story of Cleopatra to provide a history of the middle of the 1st century B.C. which is steeped in excitement and intrigue. The story of Cleopatra is often shown in movies and books as the scapegoat by her enemies but I think the author captured the true story of her life and rule of Egypt. It is a must read for a bit of Roman and Egyptian history and the role of the last pharaoh in history.

I have not read much on Cleopatra, so I cannot say anything on accuracy. However, this is a good quick read into the life of a mysterious and iconic historical figure. The author makes a point to try and stick to what little facts are known about her. An excellent point made from the start is history is for the victors, and since Cleopatra was not a victor much of her story is unknown.

We think we know the story of Cleopatra V11 but we only know the Cleopatra of poems plays and films! In truth Cleopatra was a gifted Queen who lived a very lavish lifestyle and intended to keep it. If Egypt was taken over by Rome the Ptolemaic era was over, so Cleopatra did her best to form alliances to keep her as Queen of Egypt and if not her, then her son. She gambled and lost all!
