Mission to Helios is a science fiction novel that takes place in the year 1054 after the founding of the Holy Galactic Empire. The Empire, with its capital on Earth, claims a loose sovereignty over all human settlements. Human colonies on planets, moons and habitats have home rule, but the Empire insists that taxes be paid and there be no wars.
As the novel opens, a war is brewing between two colonies in the Helios double star system of red dwarf suns located in the Hyades Star Cluster, 140 light years from Earth,. One is Platonopolis, a utopia based on ideas of Plato of a State ruled by a Philosopher-King and Guardians. A second is a religious state, the Realm of the Messiahs. A third colony in the system is the New Tang Dynasty, based on a re-creation of a great historical era of its Chinese founders. There is also present an alien spaceship docked for over a year at a Lagrangian point in the Helios double star system, silently observing humans.
A spaceship from the Holy Galactic Empire, the
Splendor of Peace, and its crew of a married six-group of three men and three women are tasked with traveling through Hyperspace to the Helios system to prevent the war.
What they learn and encounter there challenges their strengths and weaknesses and calls upon their training and understanding of human life and the human condition. Preventing war among humans is not so easy.

I’ve been “following" Alan Scribner for years now because I love his writing. His Judge Marcus Flavius Severus series of mysteries set in Ancient Rome is so interesting. Though science-fiction is not my usual, there is some gorgeous writing in this new book too. Mission to Helios imagines a world of future utopias, where humans live on separate planets and still fight over territory. There is a lot of astronomy and science in this book, but what I got out of it most was the reflections on human history. Good plot, great characters, lots of facts, even a dash of sizzle. It’s a page turner. Five stars!

How do you prevent a war in outer space? A crew comprising a married six-group of three men and three women sets out in a spaceship from the Holy Galactic Empire in order to find out. Written with Scribner's customary wit and erudition, this novel takes you along on the voyage. You are going to have an enjoyable, adventure-filled ride!
