Didius Julianus (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Didius Julianus (r. 193 CE) was the second emperor in the Year of the Five Emperors, followed by Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Septimius Severus (r. 193-211 CE). He came to power after paying the Praetorian Guard to support him as emperor, forcing the Roman Senate to follow suit. Didius Julianus reigned for three weeks before a commander named Septimius Severus marched on Rome and overthrew him.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the busts and statuary used as references. These include busts from the Vatican (upper left); Capitoline Museum (lower left); and Christies (right).
