Elagabalus (Aged Artistic Facial Reconstruction) — View Full-Size Image

Elagabalus (r. 218-222 CE) was reputed to prefer women’s clothing and to adorn himself with cosmetics in the fashion of a lady. This drew controversy from later Roman historians, most notably Cassius Dio. This reconstruction depicts Elagabalus as he may have appeared later in his reign, older, clean-shaven, and wearing cosmetics.

Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the statuary and busts used as references. These include the bust from the Hulton Archive (top left), Capitoline Museum (top right), and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (bottom left).
