Antoninus Pius (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Antoninus Pius (138-161 CE) was one of the longest-ruling Roman emperors, second only to Augustus (27 BCE - 14 CE). He was a popular emperor with a reputation for being fair-minded and just. Although he did not travel extensively or expand the borders of the empire as his predecessors had, he finished many of the public works and construction projects which had been begun by his adoptive father Hadrian (117-138 CE). He also began new projects of his own, including the construction of the Antonine Wall in present-day Scotland. Antoninus Pius died in 161 CE after falling ill.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the busts and statuary used as references. These include two marble portraits from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (left) and two from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (right).
