Marcus Aurelius (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Marcus Aurelius (r. 161-180 CE) is considered to be the last of the Five Good Emperors. He is renowned as a Stoic philosopher, and the author of 'Meditations'. Despite Marcus Aurelius’ peaceful nature and outlook on ruling, his reign was full of conflict. He waged successful campaigns against the Germanic tribes of northern Europe and the Parthian Empire in the east. His reign was generally prosperous, despite outbreaks of plague and the ongoing persecution of Christians.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the busts and statuary used as references. These include busts from the Glyptothek, Munich (top left); Musée des Antiques de Toulouse (top right); Musée Saint-Raymond (bottom left); and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (bottom right).
