Lucius Verus (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Lucius Verus (r. 161-164 CE) was the adoptive brother and co-emperor of Marcus Aurelius. Their joint-rule was a first in Roman history but would be repeated by later generations of co-emperors. The two began their reigns with projects intended to improve the economy and extend liberties to the Roman people. Lucius Verus spent much of his short reign waging war on the Parthian Empire and the Germanic tribes. He died of illness in 169 CE, possibly caused by the outbreak of the Antonine Plague (165-180 CE).
Pictured alongside the reconstruction are the busts and statuary used as references. These include the bust from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Colossal Head of Lucius Verus from the Louvre (right), and the Vatican bust.
