Pertinax (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Pertinax (r. 193 CE) was put forth as emperor by the Praetorian Guard after Commodus was assassinated. His policies of budget-cutting were unpopular with the Roman Senate, the populace, and the Praetorian Guard which had put him on the throne in the first place. He ruled for only three months in 193 CE, before the Praetorian Guard assassinated him and offered the imperial title to the highest bidder. 193 CE was a year of instability, which became known as the Year of the Five Emperors.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction is the bust of Pertinax from the Vatican Museum.
