Pupienus (Artistic Facial Reconstruction)
Pupienus (r. 238 CE) and his co-emperor Balbinus were appointed as the successors of Gordian I and Gordian II. Despite being successful in defeating Maximinus Thrax, leading to his subsequent assassination, Pupienus was unpopular in Rome. He was murdered by the Praetorian Guard upon his victorious return to the capital.
Pictured alongside the reconstruction is the Capitoline bust of Pupienus.
