The high quality of the pattern-welded steel blade and beautiful decoration on the hilt indicate that it was owned by a high-status warrior. Steel blade, decorated with copper, silver, and niello.

Likely made in Scandinavia. 10th century CE. 95.9 cm (37 3/4 in) x 11 cm (4 5/16 in). Weight: 1021 g (2 lb 4 oz). Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
