Hellenistic Head of an Aethiopian — View Full-Size Image

This beautifully crafted head portrays an "Aethiopian", or black African, and is made out of black bronze, gold, obsidian and carnelian. The piece was once a part of an ornate object like a serving dish although it has been broken off at some point between Antiquity and today. Crafted in Hellenistic style, the piece comes from Ptolemaic Egypt and dates to roughly 332-30 BCE. It is now a part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
