In ancient Greek and Roman art, women were often depicted with white skin, to contrast them with men who were depicted with red or black skin. This also created a sharp visual distinction between Amazons and Greek warriors in some artworks. This amphora depicts Hercules fighting the Amazon queen Hippolyte. Made in Attica, attributed to a painter of Bateman Group, c. 530 BCE. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
