Musical Scene on a Bell Krater
A well-known representation of same-sex desire from ancient Greece is the love poetry of Sappho of Lesbos, a woman who lived during the 7th century BCE. This painting of two women listening while a third plays the lyre has been suggested to depict Sappho. It certainly depicts an aspect of life which would be familiar to many women in ancient Greece, participation in choral groups and musical performance. The closeness and intimacy of this composition set it apart from many other similar vases. Attributed to the Danaë Painter, c. 460 BCE.
