Detail from the Warren Cup
Ancient Roman society, like other ancient societies, made no distinction between opposite-sex and same-sex desire. Roman men were expected to behave according to Roman ideas of masculinity but were free to pursue male or female companions. Pictured here is the Warren Cup, a Roman silver vessel depicting two same-sex male couples. The cup is one of the most famous representations of homosexuality in Roman art. c. 1st century CE.
