Examples of same-sex love and courtship abound in Greek mythology and the art and literature of ancient Greece. In Greek society, pederastic relationships between men and youths were common. These types of relationships were encouraged to help educate the younger partner as he entered adulthood. In Greek art, the older partner is often depicted with a beard (or the beginnings of one) while the younger is smooth-faced. Painting attributed to Peithinos, c. 500 BCE. From Vulci, Italy.
