The Sea at L'Estaque by Cézanne
An 1876 landscape painting in oils, The Sea at L'Estaque, by Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. Cézanne lived in L'Estaque, 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Marseille, in the 1870s. The artist was captivated by the sunlight of southern France, not only for its illumination of bright colours but also its effect of flattening a scene, something he strived to capture on canvas, as here.
