Portrait of the Artist's Son by Cézanne
An 1881-2 painting in oils, Portrait of the Artist's Son, by Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), the French post-impressionist artist. Cézanne's son, also called Paul (b. 1872), is here around nine years old. He was a frequent sitter for his father, no easy task as the artist often insisted on remaining motionless and not speaking for several hours at a sitting. Unusually, the artist uses thin paint and very fine brush strokes for this portrait. (Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris)
