The Execution of Emperor Maximilian by Manet
An 1867-8 oil on canvas painting, The Execution of Emperor Maximilian, by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Maximilian was a puppet emperor in Mexico who was executed following the withdrawal of French support. A controversial subject, which was banned by the French government, Manet produced several works on it. (Städtische Kunsthalle, Mannheim, Germany)
